WATCH: Chicago Gang Memeber Press Conference
Source: The Huffington Post
According to Chicago Sun-Times columnist Mary Mitchell, the leaders gathered at 10 a.m. at the Columbus Park Refectory on the West Side “to denounce Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis’ threats to crack down on gang leaders.”
Members of the Vice Lords, Disciples, Kings, Stones, Hustlers, Souls and Cobras were reportedly on hand to share their concern with the public.
This bizarre press conference is a response to an alleged police department vow to make gang “leaders’ lives miserable” at a secret August meeting. A source told the Sun-Times the police would be using RICO laws to do “everything from towing their cars for parking violations, to ramping up parole visits, to pulling them over repeatedly for traffic stops” if they did not stop the violence.
Sound off: What do you think about gang members holding press conferences and how can we stop the epidemic of violence in our communities?

Food prices rose 5 percent globally during August, according to the United Nations, spurred mostly by the higher cost of wheat, and the first signs of unrest erupted as 10 people died in Mozambique during clashes ignited partly by a 30 percent leap in the cost of bread .
“You are dealing with an unstable situation,” said Abdolreza Abbassian, an economist at the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome.
“People still remember what happened a few years ago, so it is a combination of psychology and the expectation that worse may come,” he added. “There are critical months ahead.”
The F.A.O. has called a special session of grain experts from around the world on Sept. 24 to address the supply question. Given that the fields stretching out from the Black Sea have been the main source of a huge leap in wheat trade over the past decade, the fluctuating weather patterns and unstable harvests there will have to be addressed, he said.

Washington — Twenty-one years after she began her undergraduate work, Republican Christine O’Donnell can accurately call herself a college graduate.
A spokesman for Fairleigh Dickinson University says the tea party-backed Senate candidate earned her bachelor’s degree in English literature on Wednesday. Spokesman Scott Giglio says he cannot provide more information.
O’Donnell has been dogged by questions over her claims she graduated from the New Jersey school; she later conceded that while she attended graduation day in 1993, she did not collect a diploma.
Republicans have questioned O’Donnell’s credibility as they try to stop her candidacy. She is in a bitter primary against Rep. Mike Castle, who has the backing of the political establishment.

A fire last weekend at the construction site of a future mosque in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, has been determined to be arson, a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spokesman said Friday.
Lab reports indicate that accelerants were used to start and spread the fire, which destroyed an earth mover and damaged three other vehicles at the future site of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, ATF spokesman Eric Kehn said.
There are no suspects in the arson, which occurred early Saturday morning, Kehn said. The investigation is ongoing and the ATF and FBI are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect or suspects, authorities said at a Friday press conference at the construction site.
“Somebody here in Rutherford County knows what happened here,” said Keith Moses, an FBI assistant special agent based in Nashville, at the press conference, which featured representatives from the Islamic center.

New York – The mother of a 4-year-old girl found dead in her Brooklyn home Thursday morning was charged Friday with second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child, according to police.
Marchella Pierce weighed just 15 pounds and had marks on her hands and ankles when police found her unconscious in her family’s apartment, according to CNN affiliate WABC-TV.
Her mother, Carlotta Brett-Pierce, was also charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal uses of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of marijuana after a small quantity of controlled substance and marijuana were recovered from the apartment, authorities said.
WABC said the girl was hospitalized following her premature birth and nourished with a feeding tube. She came home in February, the station said. The New York Times said detectives were trying to determine whether the girl had been bound to a bed after they found marks on her ankles that appeared consistent with twine that was found tied to the head- and foot-boards of a small bed.
