The truth behind Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s 9/11 sermon

03/20/2008 5:47 pm 72 comments

As this whole sordid episode has played out over the last week, I wanted to understand what he said in this speech. I’ve been saying all week that context is important, and I just wanted to know what the hell was going on.

I actually listened to the sermon Rev. Wright gave after September 11 titled, “The Day of Jerusalem’s Fall.”

One of the most controversial statements in this sermon was when he mentioned “chickens coming home to roost.” He was actually quoting a former Ambassador, Edward Peck, who was speaking on FOX NEWS. That’s what he told the audience. He was quoting Peck as saying that America’s foreign policy has put the nation in peril.

Wright then went on to outline the instances the nation was involved in terrorism, beginning with the Native Americans – taking it from them; took Africans for slavery; then went on to talk about bombing Grenada, Panama, Qadafhi’s home, bombed Iraq and killed unarmed civilians, bombed a plant in Sudan that killed innocent people, bombed Hiroshima,…”and we never batted an eye,” he said.

“We are indignant that the stuff that we have done overseas is brought back into our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost. Violence begets violence. Hatred begets hatred. And terrorism begets terrorism. A white ambassador said that y’all, not a black militant. Not a reverend who preaches about racism. An ambassador whose eyes are wide open and who is trying to get us to wake up and move away from this dangerous precipice upon which we are now poised. The ambassador said the people we have wounded don’t have the military capability we have. but they do have individuals who are willing to die and take thousands with them. And we need to come to grips with that.”

He went on to describe seeing the photos of the aftermath because he was in Newark when the planes struck. After seeing the plane slammed into the building, he spoke passionately about what if you never got a chance to say hello to your family again. “What is the state of your family?”

And then he told his congregation that he loved them and asked the church to tell each other they loved themselves.

His thesis:

1. This is a time for self-examination of ourselves and our families.

2. This is a time for social transformation (then he went on to say they won’t put me on PBS or national cable for what I’m about to say. Talk about prophetic!) “We have got to change the way we have been doing things as a society,” he said. He then said we can’t stop messing over people and thinking they can’t touch us. He then said we may need to declare war on racism, injustice and greed, instead of war on other countries. “Maybe we need to declare war on AIDS. In five minutes the Congress found $40 billion to rebuild New York and the families that died in sudden death, do you think we can find the money to make medicine available for people who are dying a slow death? Maybe we need to declare war on the nation’s healthcare system that leaves the nation’s poor with no health coverage? Maybe we need to declare war on the mishandled educational system and provide quality education for everybody, every citizen, based on their ability to learn, not their ability to pay. This is a time for social transformation.”

3. This is time to tell God thank you for all that he has provided and that he gave him and others another chance to do His will.

By the way, no where in this sermon did he said “God damn America.” I’m not sure which sermon that came from.

This doesn’t explain anything away, nor does it absolve Wright of using the N-word, but what it does do is add an accurate perspective to this conversation.

What happened to the days that those in charge of bringing us the objective information called the “news”, first arming themselves with “complete” information from evey angle on a subject prior to reporting this news to the public.

Today’s media outlets are only concerned with reacting to personal fears and engaging in baseless conjecture as a means of reporting the news. Present day social ignorance in the media globally panders to the irresponsibility of disseminating incomplete information. Misunderstandings and ignorance fester into hatred and war.

Roland Martin, thank you for being an excellent journalist, a scholar and a gentleman. If not for you America would to have the opportunity to be exposed in a debate arena to an articulate and well informed representative of the black community able to make a point in within the ridiculous constraints of the time allowed.

Please post the full sermon so every one can hear it.

Barack Obama needs people to be able to hear the full context of the sermon.

Please. We want to support and defend Barack, but it is hard knowing we only have only a piece of the fact which are being distorted for Fox News’ benefit.

Everyone needs to hear the whole sermons in question to clear Barack and clear Rev. Wright.

How refreshing and integral your perspective has been in a sea of commentators that in my opinion have no business on television. I have begun to question the credentials, motives, and quite honestly the senisbility to even be in front of a camera that leads to the homes of many people across the world. Tonight on CNN, Campbell Brown did nothing to correct some of the information that Lars Larson spewed about Barack Obama. I’m beginning to wonder if these commentators even know the truth themselves and perhaps that’s why they can’t correct anything that is incorrect. Or do they even want to? The goal of these shows doesn’t seem to be to assist in resolution or to provide information but to simply debate. Why were today’s comments from Barack Obama to a radio station cut off before he said the words “of her generation” when he described her as being a typical white person. Now Lou Dobbs is saying he’s making racist stereotypical comments. Are you kidding me? His grandmother would have been born in the 20s and an adult in the 40s when blacks were being called colored, when segregation was the law, and Jim Crow ruled the south. He is right when he talks about the typical white person during that generation. Why is it that Lou Dobbs can’t see that and Election Center perpetuates this nonsense by “editing” out certain words. To add insult to injury, Lou Dobbs discusses his comments with three white men. Now why or shall I say how is that three white men are the experts on black & white race relations? Why not have a diverse panel of black/white young & old to discuss the comments. He just brought on people that shared his view and the one guy that didn’t (Senate majority leader) he cut him off and put words in this mouth. There is so much to be said about the media’s obsession with making him look bad it is ridiculous. Why no more talk about McCain’s endorsement from the baptist minister that attacked the catholic church? Why no talk about the two pending lawsuits involving the Clintons. Why not show a split screen on Hillary Clinton saying the Michigan/Florida delagates shouldn’t count and now saying they should? Why aren’t people taking a stand on these shows saying that it isn’t up to Obama to count these votes/delegates but the DNC. Why aren’t people talking about how underhanded her campaign has been? If Obama hadn’t released his taxes for the last 7 years it would be headline news and each candidate would attack him. If he had released documents with redactions from his wife, people would wonder what he’s hiding. If he would have flip flopped on NAFTA and the war it would be looping on YouTube. I don’t think he’s gotten a pass from the Media at all. It’s the Clintons that’s right both of them that have been given a pass on the pre-requisites. Obama has to denounce and reject Farakhan and now his own pastor. But Clinton can say that everyone is entitled to their opinion when speaking of her hispanic supporter he dissed Obama because he was black. She didn’t agree with Ferraro’s comments after about a week of air time. She regrets if anyone was offended by her husbands comments. They definitely get a pass. Why no media coverage on Ralph Nader’s statement citing that a Clinton campaign worker told him that they (The Clintons) were saying, “They’ve got to take that boy down.” Is it because this information was told on Al Sharpton’s show, who the mainstream media doesn’t seem to respect or acknowledge. Had it been said on the Today show or some other cable news network show it would have passed the holy grail of validity. And now the latest, Obama’s passport files have been breached? What are they looking for now? But I what I love most about him…he is still phoenix rising. No matter how much they try to sink this campaign…we can I call take solace in the fact that he can say and still I rise.

Hey Roland, I just want you to know that you do a fine job on explaining things to people who pertend to be unaware of the fact that Rev Wrights speech is true. If they wanna make it a racial issue, then lets go all the way with it. Don’t half step… Yes Rev. Wright spoke the truth. Blacks have always been look at as being inferior to the whites and yes we have been called the n-word. I think that if they put black history in school then people will get a better understanding of our culture. We do things different, ex. Dancing, music, how we fix our hair, what foods we eat, how we dont disowned someone because of them being biracial. White people are know to disowned their own color. It is also a know fact that white people would kill or beat a black for learnin how to read, letta lone be a President.

  • Frustrated

I am continually amazed at the post of people who are condemning Sen. Obama for not denouncing his pastor and not leaving the church. I would like to meet these people who have never disagreed with a loved one or who has disagreed with a loved one and turned their backs on them when the issues they disagreed with them on came to the surface. This is the most Hypocritical BS I have ever witnessed. Sen. Obama is a man none of us are prefect, if you don’t agree with his policies don’t vote for him. What I say to those individuals are Examine your own lives and the people around you and if you are honest we all have been in the company others or have had or have relationships with people whom we don’t agree with. Wake up people and start dealing with the issues of this country: job losses, failing schools, health care, housing crisis, and a host of other things. You are wasting time and energy on the issue with Pastor Wright when you and not above the very things you are condemning Sen. Obama for. This country is in trouble Wake up people focus on what is really important.

We all know that Bush is the terrorist. He has cost people there lives not only on the bombing, but also in Iraq. He is a greedy Republican that will do anything for money. He did this to world trade center. If you dont believe me look at the movie made by Michael. 911. There were bombs already in the trade center before the plane hit… look at how it exploded. When Bush was told about the attack, he was in a classroom reading a book that was upside down with kids. Lets also take a look at why he didnt respond to the levees breaking.

Since you are on CCN all the time and you have earned credibility on both sides of the races, let me ask you this question? I wonder why the news media won’t touch McCain’s Pastor problems with Rod parsley and John Hagee? I smell cover up! This is like a modern day lynching and the entire world is watching but we excuse white men who say whatever they want and associate with whom they want, yet vilify black men for speaking their minds? This is why the country is divided. Keith Olberman brought it up on 3/13 and he’s the only one who has had the guts to talk about it. Check it out on you tube and see for yourselves. the link is he’s been on his show a few times talking about yet mainstream media looks the other way? I have yet to see the story break on regular cnn, fox news or any of the networks.

Wright is from another era and his experiences are shaped by that. How is it un American to say that your foreign policies have come back to bite you in the butt? The American Militia in Texas hates the government but because they are white, we leave them alone (with the exception of Waco). Racism is real and so was the Trail of Tears and the Tuskegee Experiment but if you are Indian or Black, those incidents which those communities have embedded in their minds don’t matter or they didn’t happen? No. What about James Byrd being dragged to death in Texas in 2001? All of that happened at the hands of white men and is not a lie or conspiracy theory but no one can say it? Why is that? Are only white men able to speak their minds without repercussions or incidents? NO! After all this is America. What makes America is not wearing the dang flag or being proud to be American, even when America lynched black men and women freely, denied blacks the right to vote, hosed them in Alabama, denied them access to schools with whites, repeatedly refused Haitians seeking refuge but not Bosnians, this is THAT America. So yes, be proud in all of your misdeeds as well America and those that are so proud while being unapologetic about your acts and you send the message of hypocrisy; exactly what Obama is being accused of. Somehow though, for him and his “spiritual guide”, this is “different.” WHY?

  • Sean Braisted

The “God Damn America” sermon in its proper context.

Nah, Nah, Nah, God Damn the Media, for destroying this man. God Damn the Media for trying to change the outcome of the election.

  • Antonio Smith

Have you thought about putting this on Huffington Post or CNN? The truth needs to be told. The MSM has totally railroaded Obama and Rev. Wright. No one even bothered to post the entire sermon so people can judge for themselves the merits of his statements. They just took the parts they considered the most inflammatory, put them on a loop and played it on the hour. I have yet to see one in-depth analysis of any of these sermons to examine the content. This is an outrage!

  • Pamela C.

Is that anyway that the entire sermon can be viewed? It seems to me that others will never get pass this until the truth of the message comes out. I understand completely if it cannot be done. Thank you for this commentary. Did you know that Sean Hannity is to be in Memphis for the 40th anniversary of Dr. King’s death on April 4th. He announced it on his show. Now that is strange!

  • SM in CA

Thank you, Mr. Martin, for shedding light on this and providing the all important context. Until now, context has been entirely absent from this conversation. It is beyond foolish to judge the message of a man’s sermon, let alone his entire career, based on a 10 second sound byte. Thanks again for looking into this matter and for sharing with your readers.

  • Teresa

Thanks Roland!! I also read the entire text of Rev. Wright’s speeches, to understand the full measure of the man. It does not surprise me ONE BIT that the media took excerpts and played them. The problem I have is why has not one media outlet taken time to play the full sermons. BET ?? TV ONE ?? I understand why BET might not play the full sermons (Johnson is for Senator Clinton). Cathy Hughes over at TV ONE should be doing something to get this information out – but perhaps she is for Senator Clinton also.

I have a thought for you. Has anyone given any thought to why Senator Obama will not renounce and reject Rev. Wright?? His Christian faith is part of it. IMHO every young man needs a father figure. I believe Rev. Wright filled a need in Senator Obama’s heart – not just his soul. I do like to speculate and have NO information to support these thoughts.

  • http://RolandSMartin Steve

Thank you Roland. I am from Indiana(proud to vote for Obama)

You should bring ALL of this to everyones attention you possibly can to right the HITJOB MSM has pulled off UNCHALLENGED.

I also know that context is very important when trying to make an INFORMED descision.

I hope you will use your time on TV to do alot more informing than has been done so far on the matter.
    Thank you:

  • Brad Glisson

I wish the media would play the rest of the sermon. I know they wont because it doesn’t sell as well. but my word, you’ve laid this out beautifully. Thank you Roland. This is an absolute revelation. I’m a 25 year old white guy in North Carolina, and after reading and now Youtubing the rest of Dr Wright’s speech, I must say, I see so much of his brilliance reflected in Barack Obama. Now I’m really glad Obama wouldn’t push him away, this man’s brilliant!

  • W Johnson

You left out the part where he said “…Goddamn America…”

But, I guess that’s not important.

If you hate the country so much, why the hell do you stay here?

    I’ve hated places where I’ve lived…..and I’ve moved.

  • D Hundley

I’m suprised that someone with W. Johnson’s soaring intellect actually found this website and was able to type in a response-

I was very happy to hear that someone had actually read through the sermons and put the words into context. I was trying to find the full text online, but I cannot find them.

I am willing to give preachers a lot of slack if the point of the words is to bring home a memorable message of Christ.

  • R. McGowan

Thank you for putting this out Roland. I will email all my friends and family. They have to come here and read for themselves. But lets be clear. Rev. Wright never said Goddamn America. <— Not in that way. Dont know why folks think he said it that way. Not in the way that he hate the country. Or dont want to live here. But in a way saying shame on you America. Shame on you for all the evil things you have done to us, Native Americans, Hispanics, Asians. You feel me?
Thank you for putting it out there. Much Lov

  • SM in CA

    @ W Johnson–

The “G.D. America” snippet is from an entirely different sermon, which was delivered in 2003. The comment was not made in reference to 9/11, nor was it made in the wake of 9/11. Not excusing the Reverend’s statement, merely providing you with factually correct information.

  • M Williams

Typical response. And he did talk about the “…Goddamn America….” part. He said he could not locate which sermon that snippet was taken from. It would not surprise me if that too was taken out of context.

  • Shelia Johnson

    Mr. Johnson,
You and your fellow right-wing brothers/sisters have taken this way out of context. You DID NOT read or hear Mr. Martin or Rev. Wright say that they hate America…however this great nation does have some major issues; denying them or acting as though they don’t exisist will NOT make them go away.

  • Don G.

Well, Mr/Ms. Johnson, perhaps you would like to do so once again? I am sure that there is some other place where you would find comfort in the inability to actually speak in depth about the truth, and hide behind narrow-minded vitriolic blather.

Of course, I suspect that no matter where you lived, you would hate it.

Roland, thanks for taking the time and the chance to illuminate the truth.

  • Demi – Atlanta

I hate this country, but I’m here to stay. To hell with those who have a problem with my position. My ancestors have made great contributions to this country, which people from all races benefit from on a daily basis. A police officers make a racist comment, it’s okay. Ferraro makes a racist comment, it’s okay. Judges, politicians, mayors, governors, you name it make a racist comment, it’s okay. A black man tells the truth about his American experiences, we have a national congressional hearing. Since the mass media like marinating scandals let’s serve up how Bush and McCain are milking this country out of trillions, stealing Iraq’s oil, Bush’s connection to 911, and our governments killings of millions of men, women and children around the world. Then we can talk about, the Clintons scandals (google The Clinton Body County and Hillary Clinton Scandals). And, oh, let’s investigate the issue on how American injected aids in Africans. What started out as a disease between white men, has spreaded across the world. Based on my research, America used the Africans, and some black Americans, for their medical research. We can go there or we can keep it positive by talking about real issues like the failing economy, housing, employment, outsourcing American jobs, fair and equal justice, equality in our education systems, health care, growing the small business, police brutaility, etc. I think some people would rather close the Wright chapter than deal with the real issue.

  • Margaret

    W. Johnson, everyone has a right to their OWN personal opinions. Look at the speck in your own eye before you look at the speck in someone else’s eye.

  • Brad in Miami

I watch you on Anderson Cooper 360 almost every night. I am concerned that after reporting on this story every single night for a week now, why it took this long for the truth to come out. How did you, the producers & staff research this story? Now that everyone’s attention is shifted to Passportgate, this will most likely not get much air time. After assassinating Rev. Wright’s character for a week now, it is time for the media to come clean and apologize for reporting this story without checking the facts first. It was always there for you to listen to. Why has it taken you this long to finally listen to it? I know you are a busy man, but a lot of time has been devoted to this story already. Why didn’t you consider the whole story in the beginning.

This kind of irresponsible journalism as harmed the campaign of Barack Obama. Now that it turns out that these particular “inflammatory” comments were made by a white Republican, let’s go after all those conservatives that are calling for Rev. Wright’s head on a platter. This also makes me wonder what the context of the “God damn America” comment was. Can they also be traced to another white Republican?

  • Kealee

    W. Johnson…it’s not about moving if we hate some place. It’s not that basic. Here’s the deal, our country and as a society, we have done things as a part of our history (former and current history being made) that are shameful. It’s not wrong to look at what we have done and say “this is wrong, we need to change.” In fact, it’s the mark of true, strong character to look inward and say “I was wrong” or “we were wrong” let’s make it right.

And, I must say that your attitude is largely the reason our country is viewed the way that it is both by some at home and around the world. Trust me, I know. I used to think just like you. On 9/11, I said, “make the whole freaking middle east a parking lot!!” Then, after much reflection, I realized that I was wrong. Killing innocent people would not have made things any better…. Look inside my friend…

  • S. Mathis

Roland this is great stuff! I was aware of the details behind the sermon but I apreciate the thesis outline.

By now, you and I both know that the folks spewing this garbage (not the igorant folks that are repeating it) but the individuals that it originated with already know what was really said. This is where Hillary permanently loses the African American vote. She has to know what was really said and therefore her silence makes her guilty by ommision.

That’s a huge character flaw for a candidate that claims to be the courgaeous and scrappy fighter. It seems her supporters want Hillary but avoid the truth. Perhaps they’ve come to realize they can’t have both.

  • Karen

I took the time to investigate Trinity Church online, and I am left with still more questions on the topic of Rev. Wright.

First, I was surprised to learn that Rev. Wright is not the only Pastor of the Church. He is one of nine pastors at Trinity Church.

There are white members of the church. If the Reverend’s sermons were patently racist, why did THEY keep going back to Trinity Church? Why did THEY not leave?

Are these White members among those defending Wright’s against perceived character assassination?

To be fair, why does mass media not interview the white members of Wright’s Trinity Church to
get an understanding of what their experience is with the church and the controversial pastor?

  • Falaq

Looking at Jeremiah’s words from more than a mere 10 second snippet does put his words in a different light in which anyone who acknowledges the history of this country should be able to understand.

The real problem is that so many are in a state of denial and people like Pastor Wright shaters their ability to comfortably deny its history.

Seems like if “caucasians” were really sincere in making America the best it could be, they would gladly FIRST acknolwedge theat their crimes against us do leave us with legitimate reasons for anger. An anger that could easily be relieved if they would just quit acting like we have no reasons to look at America differenetly than they do.

As for Barack, he is a blessing to America. Barack is wanting to resolve the race problem.

  • Got oil?

W Johnson – It’s great you moved. Hopefully your new home is near a library. “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”

  • Cynthia L.A.

    Thank you Roland.
I think you did a great job. How can we get the MSM to also pick up this story? I wrote this as a benchmark to what I want to see answered for me. Help me.

What a shock we have all received. To hear comments that are a result of what the political manipulative players have now allowed to stir up in the imagination of the American voters has caused people who were chomping at the bit to blurt out. Wait; suspend judgment for a few minutes. What we have seen in these clips need to be put into context for us. I need to have a few answers before I make a judgment that will affect how I vote in November. In this video, what was theme and objective of Rev. Wright’s message? What was the topic and topic sentence? What was said after the inflammatory statements? What was said in the weeks before? What has been said for years in this church? I need to have some answers to these burning questions in order to make an informed decision. Who exposed this clip? I can infer that it was not for a good purpose. I choose to believe that Hillary Clinton did not do this. Not after her apology. Who else could have done this? Was the objective met? Let us do more investigation. Who is Rev. Wright? How may I hear more of the sermons that he preached during the last few years? Do all of his sermons have the same overtones? What are the evaluations of his peers in his profession? How exactly do other similar church parishioners behave when they hear something that speaks to their experience? In the secular world, what are the thoughts about 9/11? What theories float as to the causes of the attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and the Pentagon? What was the American reaction and response to the 9/11 events? What is the truth about the ratio of black to white in prisons? What should the reaction of African American be to an opportunity to vote for a person who resembles them in at least skin color? What do we want Mr. Obama to do about Rev. Wright? When these questions are answered satisfactorily to my understanding, I will make an informed decision. I hate people jerking me about by a chain; especially a chain of words that has faulty chinks.
    Waiting to hear more.

  • Yuri

    Dear Roland,
thanks for putting this into contexts,
however, I still have some questions, especially about Ambassador Peck’s word,
    You said:
“He was actually quoting a former Ambassador, Edward Peck, who was speaking on FOX NEWS. … He was quoting Peck as saying that America’s foreign policy has put the nation in peril.

Was he actually quoting him, or interpreting him, or just referring to his words?
Could you please do the same thing, bring a real quote from Mr. Peck?
Because I trying to find it and all I found was this:
As it says, the full transcript of Mr.Peck’s interview on Fox News (btw, on Oct 10 and 11, which, I believe, is AFTER the sermon on Sep 16, 2001),
and I could not find Mr.Peck saying anything about Native Americans, Grenada, Livia, Israel, Palestine, South Africa, Hiroshima & Nagasaki, or “American chickens coming home to roost.”

    thanks in advance,
    Yuri from Spokane, WA

The media is the one keeping this out there. They are too lazy to do the work that it needs to be thorough. They think that the new will come to them all the time. This is sensational news reporting. What ever happened to investigative reporting? Well, everybody needs a job and as long as they get advertising to keep them on the air that is what we will have.

Thank you for some real journalism. CNN is on all day, every day and you are the only one interested to seek out the context of the speeches?

The media reporting of this has been superficial, incomplete, inflammatory and sensational. How irresponsible! It has damaged Obama and the election process. Sure, everyone wants ratings, but this election will have serious consequences for the U.S. and the world. This is serious business!

So, please keep up the good work and distinguish yourself from the run of superficial reporters.

    W Johnson -

    Everything your comments projects. :)

  • Got oil?

W Johnson, your comments is a picture of your mind.

  • R. Jones

I wholeheartedly agree with you Roland and thank you for putting Reverend Wright’s comments in perspective. I’m tired of CNN, MSNBC & FOX of keeping this issue in the forefront 24/7.

There are certainly many other issues that the news services can focus on but they choose to keep this in the forefront because it gets them ratings!!! Especially if its about hating on black or white. America is not really ready to deal with issues surrounding race in this country or around the world. The dislike, hatred, misunderstanding, fear is tool deeply ingrained in our society. Perhaps one day…

  • W Johnson

Got oil? Again, what would you know about a mind?

  • Grannyluv

I am so glad that someone took an extra step to find out the totality of that speech. Some people have been looking for a while for something that they can “get” Obama on. So when this little snipet of information was released, which they have hung around Obama’s neck; boy it was thought that they hit pay dirt, but in my opinion it’s just a distraction. This is why the country is in such a turmoil because of shortsightness of some people. The media is continously injecting this piece on Dr. Wright’s speech onto the airwaves and it doesn’t appear that they want to play the other parts of that same speech because it would not garner the same response as the one we are constantly seeing. I know that I am so tired of seeing it and FOX and other cable news will not let it go because it seem to fit in there scheme. They want to play on peoples fears and there are some people that will allow them to do this. Thank God that I have never been one to just take someone elses point of view and not research thing on my own and make my own decisions.

God Bless you for doing something none of the other journalists have done. Find the truth and the whole truth and not just something for it’s shock value. I don’t believe that they want to know what is really being taught at Trinity.

  • Kaye, Texas

    Great job Roland!!!

At least someone out there is actually seeking the truth. I have heard you on at least two occasions try to make this point and was not successful in getting your entire point across. It is extremely irresponsible for the media to show these same clips over and over again and incite all of this racial tension. I agree with Cynthia, what ever happened to investigative reporting? Are the other networks making any attempt to get the entire story out there? Wow, I thought the purpose of reporting the news is to provide us with the entire story not just to achieve good ratings. It would nice if there could be some sort of follow-up. We may be condemning a man for something he may be innocent of. What can be done about this?

  • Charles Stoy

I too would like to see more about the reality of Trinity Church on the media rather than this constant replay of Rev. Wright’s statements. Mike Huckabee even defended his statements by pointing out many of the indignities Blacks endured in the segregated South. Huckabee even went so far as to say that he would probably have an even “bigger chip on my shoulder”.

I have said elsewhere that I believe that the vid’s being played on YouTube were probably patched together to create the desired images, words and impact.

  • Darcy Stonesifer

    Thank you Roland,
The posting of the whole speech was greatly appreciated. FYI I am a white Arkansas woman over 70 years old and this erased ANY doubt I may have due to the constant airing of the short snippit of Pastor Wrights. Thanks again for introducing me to Trinity through these tapes. (audio and video)

Hopefully, at some time his sermons will all be available online.

  • Beverly Sims

Please explain to me W Johnson what part that Roland Martin Just stated you did not understand, HE SAID THAT NO WHERE IN THE SERMON WAS SAID “GODDAMN AMERICA, is it that you have hate in your heart and are just looking for an excuse to have against Obama just like FOX NEWS who are only putting out sound bites and the Clinton’s and Republican Party.

  • Beverly Sims

To Cynthia L.A, all of the questions that you are asking you know in your heart, if you are going to vote for Obama, it will be on his merit, not waiting to hear sound bites that Racist Fox News is now reporting on, and I would also be waiting for you on these questions. Do you feel that people of faith that went to the Catholic Churches in which many priest raped girls and boys and had to pay over 600 million dollars out of court should have left? Should they lose their religion? Do you feel that sound bites and not the entire story should be constantly shown on national television as race baiting? Have you ever stated something racial about anyone that you worked with? Did you feel that the parishioners of Rev. Falwell and Pat Robertson should have left their churches after the statements that were made about 9/11?

Do you feel that Rev Hagee’s parishioners should leave his church because of race statements he made? Do you feel that Senator McCain should have fired, not suspended the surrogate that merged Senator Obama words and Rev Wright’s words into a frame and upload on YouTube for more race baiting? Do you feel that Senator McCain should have distanced himself from Rev Hagee for his race hatred speech with the Arab community? Do you feel that Senator Obama is being treated with character assassination? Are you going to write Fox News and ask them why they are not showing the entire footage just to be fair and balanced as they state so many times?

Do you clutch your purse when you get on the elevator with a black man? that you I personally do not feel that Senator Obama should have given a speech on race, because every word, syllable, frame that he speaks is being dissected like an animal, and for those who are on the fence about Obama will always be there and looking for any excuse not to vote for him, he is qualified, a breath of fresh air and so different from the petty politics that we see today, he has tried very hard not to make this a race about race, but you people and the press will always feel that no matter the qualifications, he will never be qualified because of his race. I have one more question for you Cynthia L.A. Do you feel that the governor of PA by stating all the time that there are some places in PA that will not vote for a black man under any circumstances is race baiting? As you I will be waiting to hear also.

  • John

The God Damn America speech was also decontextualized to the point of absurdity.

Here’s the actual sermon on youtube

Hannity deserves to be fired, maybe even tried for treason for subverting democracy.

  • Validation | Reproach of Men Blog

[...] So it is with Pastor Wright and his quotation of Edward Peck. The pastor did not see fit anywhere in the sermon to specifically distance himself from Edward Peck and his statements. Instead, according to a blog that supports Pastor Wright, the Pastor’s comments were: “We are indignant that the stuff that we have done overseas is brought back into our own front yards. And we need to come to grips with that.”1 [...]

nice entry Roland. I would like to know what was so problematic about the Reverend’s use of the N word though?

Two points I will like to make on this sermon: Rev Wright made an excellent point on how money can be found to do harm (war) yet this government can not come up with money for homelessness, healthcare reform, AIDS, education, and understanding race relations. The second point I want to make is that the media has use these many distrations and diversions to keep the American people from what is really going on such as the recession, foreclosures of people homes, job loss, and this ongoing war in two countries that we alone are footing the bill for. The amount of money that is poor into the Department of Defense budget could be better used for positive things such as the list mentioned above. People please don’t be fooled by this non-sense focus on the problems you face daily and asked yourself am I doing better or worse under the current administration? If the answer is no then it is a time for a change for the better than what we have now.

  • M. Smith

Thank you so much for taking the time to thoroughly and accurately investigate the context of the sermon from which Rev. Wright’s “imflammatory” remarks were made. I enjoyed reading the sermon, which only confirmed my suspicions regarding the context that mainstream media has failed to report. It is unfortunate that the media at large has failed to take what is a relatively simple step. (i.e., investigating the sermon’s context) However, my hunch is that they have taken the step and are too embarrassed to air the sermon in its entirety. If you can encourage some of your affiliates to air a longer segment of the service, you would be doing a huge service to Rev. Wright, Sen. Obama, the African-American community, and America at large.

    M. Smith

  • Erica Cabbagestalk

Roland, I think you are doing a wonderful job of getting people to look at the full spectrum of the situation of Rev. Wright’s sermons. America is defensive right now because old wounds have had salt poured on them and to have to face the many injustices that blacks and poor people have had to endure at the hands of those who have always been elevated by power and money is unsettling to them and those are the people who will never change their minds about what the Rev. said. I know now more than ever that we need a president Obama to elevate all Americans to higher heights so that we can finally stop hiding from these old sins and pretending they never happened and do not still effect the society we live in today so that we can really become a united country and united people and give the next generation the kind of country they are really longing to have. A country where you can be free to love, care about your fellow man and not have to feel that you will be losing out on anything for embracing those who are different than yourself.

  • greg

The one thing that is so apparent is the fact that White America are victims of those who would spread the fear, that same fear that made you leave a perfectly good house in a nice neighborhood, once one black family moved in ” Better cut and run while the the price is good” Just think about the fact that you were threatened out of your homes by the insinuation not by the new family of color. It’s time for a change. Yes you can, the thing that is so apparent is there are those of your own kind that will continue to appeal to the thing in you that corrects your child at a news stand when they pick up a “Black magazine”, or anything associated with Blacks. Ive seen it and I know others have also, and I bet you never really questioned it. Why did your parents hurry to correct you?Or distract you or give you another magazine to look at, Why? The bigger question is, Why are you still letting someone do that to you, even now? Stop, pull yourself together and think. Why are some people calling out fire in a theater? Do they want a stampede? I know what history demonstrates but I can only HOPE you will be brave enough to release yourselves from this grip. I do understand that fear is truly a powerful emotion. Ive been a victim of what fear can cause others to do to another. Just take a look at the situation in real life terms, we have a chance to turn this thing around, to birth a new thought, to trust in what we say we believe. I believe we can set this country on a path to greatness, not just this time but in the future with others who are willing to serve, to achieve the greater good.

Thank you so much for Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s sermon. I listened to the whole thing and I enjoyed it very much. The news people are and have done this man an injustice. They all ought to be ashamed of themselves for not reporting the truth. You would think some of them would have the decency to listen to the sermon and go on the news and tell the nation the truth.

Please get the rest of the sermons I would like to hear them all.

Once again thank you very much!!

  • Prophetess

My Bishop told me about this article that you did and I am so glad that I have read it. There is such truth and vindication for Pastor Wright. He is not the unintelligent bigot that newscasters paint him to be but rather a true soldier. As I hear people calling him un-American on the majority of news channels, I say to myself that no one will look at the fact that Pastor Wright was a soldier and he paid the ultimate price of laying down his life and fighting for a government that still didn’t see him or his race as equal and treating him as a foreigner in his homeland. Roland I would love to see you debate Sean Hannity because he is so pompass and bigoted it is ridiculous. That is something I would sit and watch and replay for years to come. YHWH bless you brother!

  • Sen. Clinton’s remarks on Rev. Wright

I believe Sen. Clinton’s campaign staged someone in the audience to ask the question about Rev. Wright. If not, why was she reading from her notes as she responded to the question?

I’m ashamed and angered that we are allowing ourselves to become a nation of soundbites and headlines. I don’t know which came first, the media or the candidates deplorable tactics? I’m even drawn into this–getting so upset that Obama won’t retaliate with name-calling when it was his talk of unity and respect for all that inspired us all in the beginning. Shame on me. As far as Rev Wright controversy, I listened to the entire sermon. As a white person living in today’s society, I felt that it was more of a call for positive change than an attack on me. As an American, I felt the sermon reminded me that if not aware of our political past, it will surely be repeated. As someone raised in the Baptist faith, I am reminded about the cities of Sodam and Gomorrah. How proud they might have been, allowing greed and power to overshadow humanity. God did condemn them. The truth stings ,but we can learn from it. A great leader needs to be able to hear truths about our country, good and bad; a great leader needs to love our country so much that he/she would want us to strive to be more than we are. Anyone can turn a deaf ear to ugly words, but those who can listen to gain understanding even while still disagreeing can get us to the next level. Anyway, that’s one opinion. Thanks for listening..

By the way Roland, you were part of the talk on Fox last night. Bill and Greta talked about you. They act like they do not understand why you are saying some of the things that you are saying. I used to really like Greta, but I’m seeing that she is really no better than they are. O’reilly says that he is now taking on everyone who calls people racist. What nerve!!! Him of all people talking about racist people. Such hypocrits on that show, such hypocrits. Bill O’reilly could not tell me a thing. I think that it is pretty sad that You’ve got republicans switiching over to vote for Hillary, because they feel that she would be easier to beat, you’ve got Hillary being caught in a lie, and then you have Hillary throwing Obama under the bus, to take the pressure off of herself. This is sad, and they wonder why blacks feel the way that they do. Whatever happened to fairness and picking a candidate based on their qualifications. I am offended by Hillary throwing Obama under the bus and my intelligence is insulted that she thinks nobody knew what she did. Then you have Lanny Davis going on CNN trying to keep the Jeremiah Wright story going. These people make me sick. I think that when you start looking at a persons character, it has a tendency to stand out more, because it shows what a person would do to win. This is a sad day. It is also amazing how people won’t watch the entire sermon, because they would rather keep the focus on Obama.

  • Cheryl Andrews

I thank you for representing the truth on many issues concerning this election……your analysis has been on target, to say the least about your facts……..I have been on Fox News with the uninformed bloggers……..and needless to say I’ve been holding my own…..I proposed this question to them……What if your father whom you loved and respected as a child was a long time KKK member…..and you yourself was raised in that environment all you life……Now once you became grown and found out that what your father said was wrong…….would you denounce, disown, or even tar and feather him for his belief system……..Or would you try and educate him about the fact that his way of thinking is “unAmerican” and wrong….. I only had one blogger to respond……These people don’t want changed nor do they want a man like Senator Obama to enter the White House.

  • Tesa P

Thank you for being the voice of reason. The issue of race is one that America has not been able to face. Rev. Wright has actually does us a favor, he started the discussion. Throughout this campaign we (Americans) have said race will not be a factor but we (African Americans) knew it would be. Now who will continue the discussion, I noticed alot of people jumping on this man and calling him a racist stating tha he is so “ANGRY”, but not once did anyone ask why this Veteran, American, Man was so ANGRY. Probably because they thought he was just another angry black man, but no one stopped to ask why. I honestly think that white America does not understand the black community. The reasoning behind ones words is usually stronger than the words themselves. Until America is ready to seriously have the Black and White discussion, the truth, feelings and cause of these problems will never be clear to them. Maybe then they will stop saying, get over slavery, racism does not exist and everyone is equal.

I enjoy you so much keep up the good work. America needs to hear this sermon.
Every time that Religion and Politics are mixed you get a fireball. We need to realize that you can’t mix the two just as you can’t serve two masters and that’s what’s happening in America. I think that we have a lot of self-righteous people. Remember there is no big sin and little sin, sin is sin. Ministers should bring people the teaching of Christ and raise awareness when people or nations are going and have gone in the wrong direction. America is self righteous and if you speak out against the things that are happened you are called unpatriotic; isn’t that the way a thief acts when caught. I also believe we are dealing with different cultures. America needs to realize that the treatment the African American have received has not been easy to overcome it works just like dysfunctional families it takes time and generations to heal.
I have researched everything in that sermon Wrights knows what he preaching about. It has been a lot of controversy about Aids, Oral polio vaccine, SV40, AIDS from the smallpox and hepatitis B vaccines. The Oral Polio vaccine was first tested in Africa do a little research. American needs to start reading things I think that if you do a little reading you will find the message very informative. Remember Christ was crucified for being righteous.
Compare the use of the word goddamned and God Damned America:
Definition of Damned means cursed, or shall we say God will curse us for disobedience. Rev Wright said God Damn American meaning America will be cursed for being disobedient, mistreating people and deceiving the American people.
I found this article interesting By the Rant Capitol Hill. President Bush said “It just a goddamned piece of paper” and “I don’t give a goddamned I’m chief and commander”. This is our Chief and commander what piece of paper was he referring to? How unpatriotic is this…. the way the word is used by President Bush is blaspheming and vulgarity.
The teaching of Christ is very simple follow the Golden Rule Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. ” or, as in the Sermon on the Mount, “Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so unto them.” Matt. 7:12; Luke 6:31. You reap what you sow IN 1 Samuel 15 is where God commanded Saul to … This is found in the first chapter of 11 Samuel,

Rev. Wright being called an anti-semite is getting real tired ! Although he is in real good company as former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Harry S. Truman have been called anti- semitic by the 9%. Its time this Country cater to the majoriy instead of the small group that is taking advantage of everyday Americans. Roland, I have to give you and Jamal Simmons alot of credit for going in the hornets nest of CNN’s ” experts ” on a daily/weekly basis! Please tell either Obama or Clinton to focus on the viscious and disturbing crime rates we have here in America. I’ve been tired of this mess. The media is just trying to scrutinize every little thing in regards to Obama.

If they truly knew their Word, they would know that you must be obedient to God and move when He says move and not before then.

Barack has every right to remain at his church if he wants to. He doesn’t have to leave because he does not agree with what Rev. Wright said. I am sure that we all have had that experience of not agreeing with our pastor, but that doesn’t mean you are supposed to jump ship.

The media is something else, and I am getting sick of them and many other critical people.

Maybe they didn’t think that Obama could pull this campaign off, and now those that truly don’t want him to win are running scared. That’s a good question to think about.

Racism is still ALIVE in America, as quiet as it’s kept!!!!!!!!!

Heres the think in pittsburgh,pa the worse of the worse for blacks this rev. wright thing they the news is making it worse for them i mean whites if you go on the street s and ask a everyday person about whats going on they will say just like obama himself said typical white people we black people know how they do whether its at work or school or out shopping they white people will find a reason for anything just like what they are doing to obama, so what if the pastor said it some of those things people need to ask there self did he lie about any of it and second look at your own backyard white people i bet none of them disown they grandfathers and grandmothers im sure they had nothing bad to say about black folks.

  • Karen

I’m thankful that many young white Americans don’t focus on color. What an ignorant nation we’ll be if we allow race or gender to hinder us from choosing the best candidate for presidency.

We’ve lost over 4,000 soldiers….of all races in a senseless war. We will all reap what we sow. McCain has already publicly stated that our soldier can stay in war for another 100 years.

Just look at our country! The foreclosures, the gang violence, the lack of appropriate health care. What corruption? Apparently, the ungodly rich conservative whites are now ready to throw everyone under the bus.

This is beyond race. It’s the ungodly rich verses everyone else. This reminds me of how the Isaeralites turned to pagantry when Moses went to receive the commandments. God allowed them to wander for 40 years until the OLDER, CORRUPT ones died out. These old, evil, conservative hypocrites who constantly sow discord, need to die out so that we can truly become the nation that exemplies the pledge of alligence.

They are truly trying to divide the Democratic party. Satan/Bush Administration lives. He came to steal, kill and destroy. Hell will be their home….can’t get out of that one! It’s time to serve God and be obedient to HIS word. I can only pray for our leaders.

Lets just say all of this is true, and supported with News Reports by ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, and Official FBI investigations. I did note after 9/11 that the failures of of Home Banking Financing, And the cost of these failures was at the cost to Tax Payers. The crash of the Stock Market at $980 Billion dollars in one day disappeared and I do not remember the firm that lost the most invested dollars, but I think it was the AARP.

A lot of people handle this information carefully because they fear a link to Organizes Crime Figures in America. I assure you this, I am after one company that failed these Crime Figures, I am after the poppy fields and to end this Damn War Based on a lie, in part, of why we are at War. These Organized Crime Figures, from the Streets to the Families, do not want any part of this because it is a insult to the whole world of Man, and this Attack was a statement to pin point, of being betrayed within a deal made to sell Heroin.
You do not make deals with the Family or Drug Lords and think because you may have the support of a Official of Government to back you up that you are safe.
I will tell you all this one more time, I am dyslectic and because of this curse, I can see into the truth and lies of issues and People. I stay far from the connection of Man because of this curse, and I have never opened my mouth for over 30 to 40 years. Now I am in this Matrix, and I allow my mind to see that of which I do not wish to see.
The Matrix of the Internet is buzzing as this truth unfolds before all of the People of the United States Of America. And All I wish for is to go back to work as a painter, and be within the hills of Tennessee, where I belong. My whole web site was built for President Obama, my love for all my children, my faith in God and Country.
My mind is tired of seeing this world of betrayal because of a Dollar. And I am one of few to betray my Faith, I will use this Faith and this War has ended and the connection that all men and women sense to a past that is ancient in origin flows through this world as we look at the sky or a tree.
