Who better than to speak on race and intolerance than Mr. Roland Martin? See as he is guilty of both racism and intolerance himself. Hopefully he can reference his last appearances on the Paula Zahn show for material on intolerance and racism.

If racial tension, racism and intolerance were to go away completely tomorrow, Mr. Martin would no longer be able to make a living – his entire liveliehood is staked upon those very issues always being at hand so he can fuel the fire and get people riled up.

Your time in the spotlight is limited Mr. Martin – use it the best you can – not just for your own name, but for PEOPLE (not just black people) as a whole. I’ll be watching with bated breath to see how foolish he makes himself appear this time.

    Dear Roland Martin,

Excellent rebuttal of D’Souza’s ludicrous and ideologically based arguments! I applauded as you brought up the fact that it was the U.S. that overthrew Mosadegh, which is a bit of factual history that needed to be stated and understood. As you poited out, that began the whole trajectory the world is facing today – between the U.S “McWorld/Mc Crusade” on one hand and “Jihad” on the other – two reactionary poles that reinforce each other, even while opposing each other.

The logic of the logic” (as Richard Pryor used to say) of D’Souza’s argument is that “in order to drive a wedge between radical and fundamentalist Islamic forces”, the US should clamp down against Gays, Woman’s rights, free speech and all that progressive people stand for – so fundamentalists of the world will see “us” as the the same as “them.” This fits conveniently with the overall objectives of the fascist forces that D’Souza, wittingly or unwittingly, represents.

I thought you might be interested in an article I authored for the San Francisco BayView National Black Newspaper. “Why we’re in the Situation we’re in, and what to do about it…” appeared in the Jan. 3, 2007 issue. It speaks of the recent talks by Bob Avakian, Chairman of the RCP, which can be downloaded at http://www.bobavakian.net

I think you will find them both interesting and provoking, and foundational for the points that you made on CNN.

    Keep it up!

Why is a “Black Newspaper” allowed? Isn’t this racism? If there were a “White Newspaper” published it would be denigrated as racist or supremist. I never understood this. Miss Black America, Black TV, etc. Why are we not just all the same? Isn’t that the point?

  • http://rolandsmartin.com Roland

    Thanks for your post Susan.

The short answer is that for so many years African Americans have not been fully represented in mainstream newspapers. For instance, take the time to actually look at the number of columnists in your daily newspaper. You will find few faces of color. Look at television news. Very few people of color.

Black newspapers serve a purpose by being able to showcase African Americans who are otherwise ignored by mainstream media. If you buy one of the mainstream papers in Chicago, you MIGHT get to see a handful of African Americans speaking out on issues of the day; maybe five. If you buy the Chicago Defender – and we are four times a week compared to seven times a week – you’ll see two on the commentary page EVERY DAY.

Now, do you object to Jewish newspapers? Polish newspapers? Latino newspapers? Catholic newspapers? Baptist newspapers? Muslim newspapers? Gay newspapers? Male publications? Female publications?

If you take a look all around you, it will be easy to see a multiple number of niche publications. And whether people want to admit it or not, mainstream media is woefully underrepresented, and frankly, presents what is called a mainstream or dominant culture viewpoint, which is white.

When Selena was shot and killed, folks said, “Who?” Had it been Garth Brooks, that would have been different.

  • Susan

I beg to differ. I think African Americans are represented as evenly as any other people in the media. If there are not as many African Americans entering journalism, that is one thing. Perhaps more will do so in the future. And yes, I do object to all those segregational newspapers. If we are ever to be one, we have to stop segregating ourselves into racial and religious groups.

And yes, when Selena was shot and killed, she was not a mainstream musician. She was primarily a Spanish-language artist just beginning to cross over to singing in English. If she had been around a few more years, she would have been just as popular as Brooks, who has been around for, what 10-15 years at least?

Your arguments are so weak and pathetic. Just drop the racism. You are a racist beyond all others.

  • http://rolandsmartin.com Roland

Susan, if you think that, then you must be blind to reality. And if you think we won’t have niche publications, then you are also blind. We’ve always had niche publications! There are niche podcasts, blogs, websites. So you think all those are bad?

Susan, what do you like? Should we discard websites or publications that fit your likes and just have one big entity that represents everyone? Sorry, not happening.

And your point about Selena is a prime example. You said she wasn’t mainstream. She was a HUGE star. So define mainstream?

You just refuse to see the America sitting before you. We are a collection of ethnic groups and cultures. Why do you think they call it a melting pot?

My wife and I watch Paula Ann Zahn tonight and I have to say that what I heard come from you was very very well presented and definetly show’s that you do your home work. Regarding Obama and running for President, I have to say myself that I would vote based on the issues and what he says he will do ” providing all the other politicians ” do there jobs. I spent 21 years in the military and it still amazes me that people see color. Its like if you get cut you bleed black or another color but because I am white I bleed RED. Ignorance is the number 1 problem with people today. Like what you said , YOUR in Jail , be quiet and do your time.

Regarding the muslims and there views and what they want for laws well thats something that really runs the BP up with me. Religion is a very very touchy issue. On one hand I say put them all on a plane with parachutes and drop them over a country appropriate for such behaver. But then again you cant do that. America is made up of immigrants and different cultures, thats what makes us the way we are.

It would be nice if we could just pack up and move on in Iraq, but thats NOT going to happen, the government tells you what they want you to here and the media hypes it up to get the ratings up where they need to be. If you told the truth and didnt hype the news people wouldnt watch it. Theres allot going on in Iraq that the media does not report and I have had the pleasure and not so pleasure of hearing from service members at the local VA in my area.

Hopefully things will get better and SOON , cause this country is going down hill. Prime example, Louisiana how much of that area is back to normal and cleaned up? What is the government doing about it? from what we see in the media not much at all. But we can put american lives in jeopardy because of OIL. Thats what it all boils down too .

One thing that I read, and hear allot of is “African Americans” WHY? I don’t go around saying that I am a German American or should I? As far as BET and Black this and black that and german , polish, Mexican, latino papers and television shows I personally do not see a problem with those. I mean think about it would you like to buy a magazine that had Better Homes and Garden with Playboy, Penthouse and Hustler and Woodworking, Electronics, computers and so on incorporated into it every month, heck you’d need a hand truck just to carry it around. Maybe I am getting off the point here but Susan mentioned are we all supposed to be the same. Well in my mind Yes and NO, if we were all the same then it would be a pretty boring country we live in. You have to have diversity is I believe the way to put it.
In the end you are what you are and thats that.

  • http://rolandsmartin.com Roland

    Michael,

I think it’s because we have always been a society that has separated people or designated them in that way. For years it was white and colored. Then Negro. Then Black. So from inception, we have never been seen as equals. As a result, the standard has been to designate people accordingly.

But there are people who make it clear they are Italian-American, Polish-American, etc.

And you make an excellent point about the magazines. What makes America unique is that people are not forced to lose their culture for one standard.

  • Wasademocrat

From your appearance on Thursday’s Paula Zahn…As one of the millions of ignorant Americans who opposses illegal immigration, I just wanted to write in and tell you that I’m going back to school. Despite my high school education from a prominent New England liberal private school, my B.S. in Political Science from a top 10 private liberal college, and my M.B.A. from a top public university (all on scholarship, by the way), I am stupid. According to you, I am a racist, xenophobic, uneducated protectionist.

Just once, I would love to hear the debate about illegal immigration framed using something other than derogatory language. But I know that’s impossible because “intellectuals” like you see yourselves as superior to people who disagree with you. I know all about you because I used to be one of you and spent many years around the same. Your type resorts to name calling because you have nothing of value to say and you can’t win the argument.

And in regards to American culture, I strongly disagree with you. America has a culture like every other country – made up of various ethnic groups and religions. France is not homogeneous, nor is Italy, Spain, Iraq, Russia, China, etc. Most countries are a collection of peoples from differing backgrounds – yes, immigrants. The only difference is, in America, we are proud of it, we flaunt it, we use it to make us stronger. We have one language (eventhough the liberals think having a common language is racist) and this language unites us. Even if we celebrate diffferent holidays, wear different clothes, and pray to different gods – at least our language and belief in the ideal of America should bring us together. America is a beautiful country, both physically and spiritually, and our culture of freedom, self-determination, pride, economic opportunity, and giving is what drives millions of people to seek citizenship here.

    Mr. Martin:
Guilty! I, too, was reticent, about supporting Sen.
Obama. Why? I simply didn’t know the man, or had been
exposed to his ideology. When he visted New Jersey,
in support of Sen. Corzine, running for NJ Governor, I
saw him, in person. His message, wasn’t new or
unique; HE was! I didn’t know his age, religion, was
he a liberal, moderate, etc. I knew he was Black, my
eyes said, he was exotic, my hears heard, that his,
was an old message, with a new twist. He learned
well, from those who preceded him. I don’t need to
name them. I am 62, years old. Old enough, to have
been his mother, old enough, to have survived
segregation, in New Orleans in the 50′s, old enough,
to have survived, thinking the “N” word, was my middle
name, old enough, to have naively thought racism, was
done for, in my native home town, New Orleans,
embarrassed enough, to stop bragging, on where I came
from! No more! When a country you pay taxes to, send
no help, for the community you called home and still
attempt to, dispense with the native populus, to the
far corners of this country, like cattle to market,
with a one-way, ticket, just like slavery, that my
mother’s words, echoed in my ears, “divide and
conquer”, the N.O. Police, using the old “basket of
crabs,” syndrome, by pulling their own people down, to
GET theirs! I say, Bring HIM ON! While we Blacks,
STILL have no agenda, for the 21st century, yet, we
need Sen. Obama’s, fresh face! He is like a cool
breeze, where the air is hot! He’s a devoted husband
and father; a family man. Whether he is a muslim,
catholic or old fashioned baptist, I really don’t
care. I care, that he is sincere, that he is honest,
that he will represent ALL of the people; rich, or
poor and that he has touched my life, profoundly.
Just when I thought all hope was gone, from this
    draconian admistration, the meanest, since
    reconstruction, segregation, civil rights and
affirmative action, that never benefitted us, I say
BRING HIM ON! I say this, because if I can vote for a
white man, I can sure as hell, vote for this Black man
and brother! We as a people, will always have a hard
road to tow, as long as we think we are Americans,
until some ignorant idiot, loathing of him/herself,
try to remind us, of their superiority. I feel sorry
for them, lost, in their love of their whiteness.
Back in 1964, I learned a life lesson, when James
Brown, sang us a NEW Black anthem, “Say It Loud”!
I’ve been saying and calling myself BLACK, ever since!
God Bless you and whoever your parents are/were.
They don’t know what a gift from God, you are!
    Respectfully,
    Sharon G. Boone

    Mrs. Boone:

If it is okay for someone like Roland Martin (or yourself) to be lost in the love of your blackness, why should it be any different for any other race?

It sounds like you guys aren’t really advocates for equal rights as much as you are advocates for unequal rights – your race being able to be proud and lost in your love of yourselves but white people should not show any kind of self-pride, or love for their geneaology or lineage.

    Double standard in my opinion.

AIR AMERICA IS BANKRUPT. YOU THINK 10 KW ON 1690 IS GOING TO REACH ANYONE?

  • http://rolandsmartin.com Roland

    Dan,

You obviously don’t know anything about WVON. First, we were not an Air America affiliate. Second, in the last ratings book, our ratings in our key demo was up 67%, our cume increased and we maintained our time spent listening. So yea, you can bet your butt that we’re reaching people.

Remember, we’ve been in business for 43 years, and we’re not some startup operation like Air America.

  • Mr. Grihm

    Roland,

Why are there not anyone addressing the true white superiority issues that is being ram down our throats everyday on tv. Next time you look at tv tell me if you see white woman slim, pretty, cultured, heros, superheros, girls got to have it, objects of everyones desires. affluent and yes, better at everyone’s culture than the inhabitant or originators of those cultrual attribute. While blacks are ugly, fat, rude, subserveant, sidekicks, criminals, wanting white woman, blonde wig wearing, and everything else that is the opposite of how these racist white supremist networks are getting everyone hooked on them.

See what Paula has to say about that. And the so called black leaders have to say. There can be no forward movement in America until the medium that everyone is hooked on is evenly representative.

Different Standards for Black and White Preachers
    Posted March 19, 2008 | 11:50 AM (EST)

Rudy Giuliani’s priest has been accused in grand jury proceedings of molesting several children and covering up the molestation of others. Giuliani would not disavow him on the campaign trail and still works with him.

Mitt Romney was part of a church that did not view black Americans as equals and actively discriminated against them. He stayed with that church all the way into his early thirties, until they were finally forced to change their policies to come into compliance with civil rights legislation. Romney never disavowed his church back then or now. He said he was proud of the faith of his fathers.
Jerry Falwell said America had 9/11 coming because we tolerated gays, feminists and liberals. It was our fault. Our chickens had come home to roost, if you will. John McCain proudly received his support and even spoke at his university’s commencement.

Reverend John Hagee has called the Catholic Church the “Great Whore.” He has said that the Anti-Christ will rise out of the European Union (of course, the Anti-Christ will also be Jewish). He has said all Muslims are trained to kill and will be part of the devil’s army when Armageddon comes (which he hopes is soon). John McCain continues to say he is proud of Reverend Hagee’s endorsement.

Reverend Rod Parsley believes America was founded to destroy Islam. Since this is such an outlandish claim, I have to add for the record, that he is not kidding. Reverend Parsley says Islam is an “anti-Christ religion” brought down from a “demon spirit.” Of course, we are in a war against all Muslims, including presumably Muslim-Americans. Buts since Parsley believes this is a Christian nation and that it should be run as a theocracy, he is not very concerned what Muslim-Americans think.

John McCain says Reverend Rod Parsley is his “spiritual guide.”

What separates all of these outrageous preachers from Barack Obama’s? You guessed it. They’re white and Reverend Jeremiah Wright is not. If it’s not racism that’s causing the disparity in media treatment of these preachers, then what is it?

I’m willing to listen to other possible explanations. And I am inclined to believe that the people these preachers go after are more important than the race of the preacher. It’s one thing to go after gays, liberals and Muslims — that seems to be perfectly acceptable in America — it’s another to accuse white folks of not living up to their ideals.

I think there is another factor at play as well. The media is deathly afraid of calling out preachers of any stripe for insane propaganda from the pulpits for fear that they will be labeled as anti-Christian. But criticism of Rev. Wright falls into their comfort zone. It’s easy to blame him for being anti-American because he criticizes American foreign and domestic policy
    .
If Rev. Wright had preached about discriminating against gay Americans or Muslims, there probably would not have been any outcry at all. That falls into the category of “respect their hateful opinions because they cloak themselves in the church.”

But one thing is indisputable — the enormous disparity in how the media has covered these white preachers as opposed to Rev. Wright. Have you ever even heard of Rod Parsley? As you can see from what I listed above, all of these white preachers have said and done the most outlandish and offensive things you can imagine — and hardly a peep
    .
If the disparity in coverage isn’t racist, then what is it?
