Roy Johnson joins Men’s Fitness
Big congrats to my homeboy, Roy Johnson, who is joining Men’s Fitness. Now his signature line gets longer!
He sent me this earlier today: “Yesterday, I was introduced to the staff of men’s fitness as its new editor-at-large. In that capacity I will write featues and provide editorial insight and direction to Editor-in-Chief Neal Boulton. Currently, he out ill. During his absence I will oversee day-to-day editorial operations. I will also work with American Media CEO David Pecker and his management team on broader strategic multi-platform initiatives and new project development.”

Roy S. Johnson is an award-winning sports journalist, entrepreneur, blogger, professor and author.
His sports column, “Pass the Word,†appears each Monday on AOL Black Voices. He appears twice weekly as an on-air “Insider†on Sportsnet NY’s “Daily News Live,†and every Friday as a co-host of NBA TV’s “Gamenight.â€
He is also a sports business analyst for CNBC, and is a regular contributor on ESPN and ESPN2’s “Cold Pizza.â€
On “Ballers, Games and Scoundrels,†his sports blog (www.passtheword.wordpress.com) Johnson offers bold yet thoughtful insights on sports personalities events, issues and controversies.
His work has appeared numerous publications, including Fortune magazine and others. He teaches sports journalism as an adjunct assistant professor at Hofstra University (Long Island, NY), and the new CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.
Johnson, who co-authored autobiographies with Earvin (Magic) Johnson and Charles Barkley, is also currently working on two new book projects.
Through his consulting firm, RSJ Media Solutions, Johnson helps clients assess new brand development opportunities and implement strategies to produce high-quality magazine, digital and television products.
He is also a partner in R/BJ Media Solutions, a media search firm with an emphasis on diversity talent.
Prior to launching his current multi-media strategy, Johnson covered sports as a reporter and manager at some the nation’s most respected publications. Most recently, he was an Assistant Managing Editor at SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, where he developed television, radio and broadband programs, other new products and special events. His television projects, including the “SPORTS ILLUSTRATED Sportsman of the Year†(FOX), the “SI Swimsuit Model Search†(NBC); and the “SI NFL Preview Show†(SpikeTV). He also conceived and launched “SI Monday Night Live,†in partnership with Westwood One.
He previously covered sports for The New York Times, was a columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and an Editor-at-Large at Fortune, where he wrote cover stories on Michael Jordan (“The Jordan Efectâ€), Tiger Woods (“The Sports Business Will Never Be the Sameâ€) and NASCAR (“America’s Fastest Growing Sportâ€).
Johnson was also founding editor-in-chief at SAVOY magazine and Editorial Director at Vanguarde Media.
His community efforts include serving as a Trustee at the Bethesda Baptist Church of New Rochelle, and a member of the Westchester Clubmen (which supports the Higher Aims after-school program for middle- and high-school African-American boys.) He has served as a board member of the Stanford University Alumni Association and is a long-time member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
