Sept. 13, 2009 Sermon: ‘Why Are There So Many Messed Up People in the Church?’

Rev. James Meeks, founder/senior pastor, Salem Baptist Church of Chicago.

Acts 1:8
Sermon title: “Why Are There So Many Messed Up People in the Church?”

- The church seems to be a magnet for disturbed, messed up people. We have people who fall over and over again.
- We have people in the church with relationship and marital problems; drug issues. We have people in the church with sexual issues. We have people with domestic abuse issues. We have people who have been abused and we have the abusers sitting in the same church.
- It’s hard for someone who has been abused to watch someone lift their hands in praise but never go back to the person they abused and appologize for their behavior.
- We have people in the church who are broke and broken.
- We have people who are paranoid.
- And we have people in the church who are plain old crazy.

The real question is why?

You would think that a church is a place of all good people, and where everyone has it together.

We must first discuss the purpose of the church to understand this.

In Acts 1:9, Jesus left His power to be witnesses. And the word witness is used 29 times in Acts. A witness is someone who can tell you what they’ve seen and what they heard. Read Acts 4:19

In order to be a witness, you have to see, hear or know something for yourself.

That’s all a judge even wants to know in court.

The disciples had a responsibility? And that was to tell the world about Jesus. Read Acts 1:21

If you don’t know what you are talking about, it’s best to shut up and keep your mouth closed.

Doing Jesus’ earthly ministry, he made it crystal clear who he is looking for. Read Luke 19:10

The earthly life of Jesus was a magnet for messed up people. Read John 4. He was dealing with a woman who was having sexual issues.

In John 8, Jesus meets a lady who was caught in the act of adultery.

Read Luke 15:2. A church is supposed to attract people with problems and have issues.

A church that attracts people with no issues, it does not reflect the ministry of Jesus and doesn’t have the Holy Ghost.

Why does the Holy Spirit draw people

We are supposed to tell people what Jesus is able to do.

We are to tell them that sanctification is a process. Church people are messing up the church because we are putting on the allusion that nothing is wrong with us. You will not be perfect the day after you join church. Every time you fall down you can get back up again. We are supposed to tell people that Jesus can heal the broken-hearted.

We are looking for people who had trouble in their marriage and Jesus healed it.

The reason so many people in the church are messed up because no one can deliver the message like Exhibit A.

The woman in John 4, when she heard about Jesus, ran into town and said I know you called me a whore, but now I got another man who has healed me.

On a daily basis, you shouldn’t be telling someone what God did for Peter, but you should be providing your own testimony.

    Roland,
Thanks for this message. It brought to mind James 1:12. I am one of those messed up people who has endured a rough storm with a mentally ill husband. While the marriage did come to an end, I left this storm stronger in my faith than when I entered the relationship with him 11 years ago. I was afraid to share with others how difficult the past two years, but as I have begun to open to people they are telling me they never knew anything was going on because I remained positive and grounded in my faith. I hold no bitterness or anger towards my ex-husband and have forgiven him for all that he did (he has bipolar disorder), because I believe the grace that God has given me each day is what I should give to him and others.

True believers in, followers of Christ, etc. our job is to teach those who don’t know and to encourage and correct those who do not know in the way of The Lord; and of course to be open to instruction, encouragement and correction from those who are truly walking and following God’s way and not those who follow in the way of the world. The Spirit of God helps us to discern one from the other:

The word of God and the Church of God is for all. The good, the bad and the ugly. And there is none good, but God. Even Mary, the mother of God needed to be saved by Him who she herself gave birth to. But we all are welcome. And when God returns to gather is followers He shall start cleaning house in the Church first. Beginning with the heads of the congregations. If the head of the church is in the wrong, and teaches what is wrong, how than can the congregation know what is right and what is wrong? In such a case, you have the blind leading the blind. Then what? Well, it is the job of the true believer to point this out, and point the lost souls in the right direction.

That said, it is important to note that the Church of God today is indeed heading down the wrong path, and that very few in the church even know that. So, what they would and should do is run like heck until he or she find a church that is on the right path. Unfortunately today, there aren’t many left. This is how we know Christ shall return very soon. Probably sooner rather than later.

Yes, the church is for the unsaved as well as the save. But our hope should be that when we hear the Word of God, as many time as needed- and WE all need to hear it over, and over again for instruction and inspiration, as well as encouragement, to walk in His Glory and His LIGHT and not the world’s. That OUR heart, and that our mind, and our spirit, and speech and actions will begin to reflect that Light within us. If we act more like the world than Christ, then there is a problem. No, no one is perfect, but we should question our own faith, belief system if we do not begin to see change in these areas, and we will see the changes and know when we are on the right track. For, The Spirit of God doesn’t lie and can not trick us. But we can, however, do that to ourselves. Satan is real and his influence is very strong, but stronger than, nor is it as strong as the Power of God.

We need to ask ourselves if our desires are pure. Do I want to be more like God? or Do I want to be like the world (Satan)? We can’t serve two masters. Nor can we live in the world and not be like the world. For we are each a product of our environment and time. It sounds like a contradiction, but it really is not. Because being like Christ requires self-sacrifice, selflessness and self-restraint. Giving up and turning away from certain things AND people in order to pick up the Cross of God and walk with Him. We can’t serve two master. We will love one and despise the other. So the question is, with whom shall it be, the very real Christ? or the very real Satan?

It is not an east task. And it is very lonely. You’ll find very many people whom you thought were followers really aren’t. They could do “good” things. But even Satan does that. They could say all the right things, but their lives do don reflect the least bit of righteousness, well not in the day light for all eyes can see. At any rate, I running on. That’s just my 2¢.

    Many blessings to you all,
    Jackie

PS: The Church of God is not just the physical church but is the entire body of true Christians (renewed in Christ) who make up the Church of Christ/God. When you meet one, you know it. God’s light cannot be hid or denied. Even Satan knows one when he meets one.

Jesus always said go and sin no more. The Bible gives specific instructions on how Christians should live their lives. He has a higher standard for the leaders. Especially the ministers and deacons. I believe so because they are examples that the rest of the flock should follow.
If the pastor is messed up, then the sheep of his flock will say of course it is alright so I can do that too. They stand in the position of gaining the whole world and losing their souls because they are causing innocent sheep to go astray.
Yes God is a forgiving God, but he is the one who will judge. Reading the instruction book (THE BIBLE) will help Christians in their walk. Jesus said if you love me feed my sheep. It is time for us to stop making excuses for our behaviors and get back into the Word and seek God’s face.

How can you convince non Christians to follow Christ if your life does not reflect the holiness that God has called you to?

“On a daily basis, you shouldn’t be telling someone what God did for Peter, but you should be providing your own testimony.” The Bible, the Quran, the Torah, all good books and they all provide a guide on how to live a successful life. We have to stop looking outside of ourselves for change – follow the guides, you can’t go wrong.

The sermon was very ninterested in that you go to church to hear the word of God spoken by nsome one who has the authority to do so , I know that many of us are sinners but you go to church to ask forgiveness and repent so if you are not in a repenting mood just dont go to church.
