MediaTakeOut.com is an example of blacks self-hating on Africa

Someone sent me a link to MediaTakeOut.com slamming my formal African outfit worn Thursday night at Alicia Keys’ Black Ball, benefitting the Keep A Child Alive Foundation.

They assert that it’s a fashion fail and things “went left.” Even more offensive, they ran a photo of a group of what appears to be Africans questioning the outfit.

What is amazing to me is you have individuals who call themselves AFRICAN Americans, yet they hate on Africa.

For the record, MediaTakeOut.com, the outfit I wore is a traditional African formal outfit. It was actually made in Accra, Ghana, last year by a clothier that makes the outfits for traditional tribal kings and elders. I picked out the fabric at a shop in Accra for the purpose of having a formal outfit made.

I own six tuxedos, and don’t particularly like to always wear them. I chose to wear this white outfit because it fit perfectly with the theme, and the white sandals, to me, were better than a pair of dress shoes.

Second, the purpose of the event was to raise funds for Alicia Keys foundation, which targets children and grandmothers in Africa. In the lobby, there were models dressed in traditional tribal gear.

It’s always amazing to hear black folks talk about the Motherland, yet hate on where civilization was created.

I have worn, and will continue to wear African formal attire at various events. I am not afraid of my culture, and want to see more AFRICAN Americans stop hating on anyone who chooses to honor our brothers and sisters in Africa.

So for the classless folks at MediaTakeOut.com, here are some links to other African outfits I’ve worn.

    Hi Roland
I thought you looked very nice in the photo, and just wanted to say it is truly amazing how we can cry discrimination at the drop of a hat, and judge our brothers and sisters in America who want to remember our heritage- I love America, but I also love where I come from. There is nothing wrong with knowledge and representing what we know and learn…..If we don’t stop such ignorance how will be ever rise? I respect the strength you have to be you, and not allow such ignorance to change your God given mind.

Roland S Martin is real as it gets!!!

Thanks for speaking out on this Roland. That post was very ignorant and clearly a reach on their part. The fact that we as African Americans continue to mock traditional African culture, essentially our culture, is a sad commentary on where we are as a people in this country. We are so immersed in Western culture and values, and i use the term “values” loosely, that we have lost sight of who we are and what we represent. Kudos for not remaining silent brother. God bless

Well, what do we expect from a gossip blog Martin? Particularly one that prides itself on degrading and pointing out our communities flaws, stereotypes, and setbacks. Matter fact they “set back” this generation about 50 years by not using their blog to say more positive things. So, don’t give the “walking dead” any energy by responding. Don’t direct your posts to their ignorance. Just educate us brotha! ‘Cause some of us are listening!

By the way, the owner of Media Take Out is AFRICAN! So sad.

Martin, thanks for writing what you wrote regarding the contradiction between what our brothers say about Africa and how they behave toward Africa. I have been in the states now for 18 years, and can only count less than 10 african-americans as my friends. It is not that I am not trying, but like many africans, It is so easy to see the contradictions in our people. So you first come to america, and you are so excited to be with the african-americans. The first you meet make fun of your accents, they make fun of your dress and your kinky hair. You ask yourself, “so who they think they are?”, and you just leave them alone. And sometimes it is easier to have a white friend who doesn’t make comment about how you speak or you dress or how you look.

There is work to be done, and writings like yours wil help bridge the gap between our people.
    Thanks
    Dr John

    Roland,

You should not have to explain this at all. Its kind of you to do so…

Alot of us haven’t caught up with the term being “African”. I’m black- labeled negro at birth ( social-political association). I am more African than those that I meet whom look down on me, so don’t generalize cause they ain’t dig yo “fit”. African’s sold our ass over here, and now they coming over here since civil rights been passed in droves. Its a healing process for alot of us especially when you extend your hand to them now and they treat you indifferent unless you have something they can benefit from(your money, a green card, a ghetto pass, etc.) PLEASE!

Thank you Roland for speaking out brother. There are lot of people like the one at mediatakeout or fakeout whaat ever u want to call em that only enjoyed putting our brothers and sisters down. I think that it s a very important to teach these ignorant a lesson.
    Thank you.

You just earned my highest respect Mr Martin.you are a true gentleman.i say don’t pay attention to the low lifes, you are way better than that.i particular take this personal because i am South African myself & live in Canada, i have seen a lot of African bashing among people in this side of the world.I think they just lack the understanding of out our culture.by the way i also follow you on Facebook & twitter keep up the good work brother.

It is truly sad when we down ourselves. Instead of Keep A Child Alive, these folks are commenting on what you wore. If we destroy each other, we can only blame ourselves when we don’t achieve the greatness we are destined for. Let’s get it together, Black America. There are more pressing things to talk about.

That website is not about what you are about. I didn’t see a by-line so I am not impress just the drive by media.

One silly idea seems to have outpaced all others in the quest for SOME to fully “integrate” into the the mass Psycho/social thing that we call America.

The false idea of ‘Critical MEDIA’ or SATIRE, or simply ‘look at me, I’m witty’

I say false because the group aligning themselves with the term ‘dissident voice,’ or ‘voice of the opposition,’ or even the ‘keep it real’ crowd now use divisive self hate criticism to appear as witty, casual, and disaffected as the one’s they wish to emulate.

open discussion and honesty is one thing, but the apparent ‘look at me I hate that stuff too’ sentiment has plagued post unity/post activist African America far too long.

You can only judge active policies that people claim don’t exist (i.e. discrimination, profiling) by the measurable effects and apparently ‘divide and conquer’ is still on the policy front burner.

African American criticism by African Americans may show cultural maturation in some eyes, but that that idea would have to run parallel with GAINS cultural GAINS.

Sure criticize all you want, comedians do it frequently, and to the tune of millions of dollars; But remember or should I say consider the active ‘state within a state we live in’

Perhaps it true that many don’t relate to Africa (and many Africans don’t relate to African Americans)
but at what cost unity? How far are we willing to go to stand out and egotistically individualize ourselves to others?

If splintering off into unionists versus republican, or GOONs versus AIM is the fate of the african american positiont, then sign up for you ‘number’ now.

  • Francesca

I only just read this article and all I can say is, ‘how truly pathetic’. I am an African who’s lived in the UK for many years and as far as I am concerned you looked very nice in that outfit. What a disgrace that it will be ridiculed in that manner by what I believe is a black website. Quite frankly it reeks of racism and shameful IGNORANCE. These are the kind of black Americans (I loathe to use the term African-American here) who in the 21st century still believe that there are Africans who live in trees as I have seen displayed on television sometimes. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the good work you do in promoting the black cause.

    Roland:

Thank you for responding. You know what the bible says about people and lack of knowledge. Anyway, regardless of the event, nature of the attire, and what you could have worn, you are a grown man who works to educate and empower our youth/country. You are a husband and a father. Therefore, if your attire is the worst or only thing that Mediatakeout.com could say about you, consider your endeavors and the impact that you have on the world successful :) . By the way, it was wonderful seeing you at Essence Fest 2009 and the Urban League Conference. I am the tall female senior enlisted Army woman who was there as part of the U.S. Army activation team.

    Respectfully,

    Evy

Bravo Roland ! Well said ! Media Take Out is the epitome of classless yellow journalism. They don’t know the meaning of loyalty and integrity either. They report erroneous and fictitious stories, and then don’t have the common sense to do a retraction. They will applaud a celebrity about a performance, award, OR a charitable act…Then turn around less than 24 hours and tear that same celebrity to shreds. It’s obviously, their way to keep their audience and advertisement money coming in. They are scandalous and don’t care WHO they step on to get a “laugh”.
