President Obama, buffeted by criticism of his massive health care reform bill and election setbacks, said today he remained determined to tackle health care and other big problems despite the political dangers to his presidency.

“I’d rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president,” he told ABC’s “World News” anchor Diane Sawyer in an exclusive interview today.

Obama sat down with Sawyer two days before he will deliver a State of the Union speech to a joint session of Congress, and he acknowledged the political setbacks of his first year in office.

The State of the Union will be Obama’s chance to jump start his agenda, but he ducked when Sawyer asked if he could guarantee there would not be a tax increase for anyone making less than $250,000.

My President has attempted to make sweeping changes on a landscape so steeped in self interest and corruption of a general nature. In his efforts forces have banned together and given him, the expected, “hard-time”, but through it he is determined to be a President that will be placed in history, and if that history reflects his deeds and records his intentions, then his statement today will bare witness
I recall him once saying that he feels like a ships captain that navigates a long barge down a narrow canal. During that navigation he must begin to slowly nudge his barge in a direction so that eventually further on he will be able to complete his turn. He liken the idea that he may start the ship in the direction of change, but the people will determine how long he will be the ship’s captain.
His statement helped me to understand the perspective he has about holding office and that aside from, ‘cheating’(a la hanging chads etc) the people will determine his tenure.
The people can allow the best thing to happen to this country in years, to be silenced. But they better look over their shoulder cause the Supreme Court of the United States has just paved the way for Corporations to pad the deck. If you don’t have an idea about “Corporatism”, you will before this is all over.
