So I came across a critique of my column calling on President Obama to go gangsta against the GOP.
It was written by Sara Libby, who used to edit my column with Creators Syndicate.
My reaction was too long to post on Twitter or Facebook, so here is what I wrote her:
“Actually, Sara, your post is the one that is way off base.
“I used “gangsta” in the headline because the GOP already accuses him of illegal, Chicago-style behavior, so I played off on that.
It is you who seems to resort to stereotypical language by bringing up busting a cap in Michael Steele’s ass or dressing up as Dr. Dre. So you chose to use racially-coded language and stereotypes. So who has the real problem? There is nothing in my column that mentioned race. Did I even mention a black gangster? Nope. I mentioned Al Capone.
See, you try to decipher gangsta as thinking it’s all about being from Compton. That’s like someone black trying to decode nigger by saying “nigga” is OK. Uh, no, both are the same. A gangsta and a gangster are both the same. Nice try.
Now, why wouldn’t anyone use gangsta to refer to President George W. Bush? Because he hails from Texas. That’s not the land of gangstas; it’s the land of cowboys. Don’t you recall all of the cowboy/John Wayne/Lone Ranger references during his eight years? Come on, now, think!
By the way, being supportive of POTUS doesn’t mean you’re a liberal. I have many conservative positions that tick off liberals. I prefer to be someone who is an independent. I don’t subscribe to an ideology like liberalism or conservatism. And I don’t subscribe to a political party like the Democrats or Republicans. I vote for people; not party; not political persuasion.
Anyone who edited me should know that.
