Obama to Offer Health Bill to Ease Impasse as Bipartisan Meeting Approaches

President Obama will put forward comprehensive health care legislation intended to bridge differences between Senate and House Democrats ahead of a summit meeting with Republicans next week, senior administration officials and Congressional aides said Thursday.

Democratic officials said the president’s proposal was being written so that it could be attached to a budget bill as a way of averting a Republican filibuster in the Senate. The procedure, known as budget reconciliation, would let Democrats advance the bill with a simple majority rather than a 60-vote supermajority.

Congressional Democrats, however, have not yet seen the proposal or signed on.

The House and the Senate each adopted a version of sweeping health care legislation late last year. But efforts to combine the measures stalled after a Republican, Scott Brown, won a special Senate election in Massachusetts on Jan. 19, effectively stripping the Democrats of the 60th vote they needed to overcome Republican filibusters.

Clearly, Pres. Obama is a different kind of leader than we have become accustomed. We are used to the bold, dictatorship style brought by Bush, Cheney, Reagan, etc. Obama is not a dictator, he is a lover, and a coordinator. He chose the people who run his cabinet, and trusted them (along with Congress) to do their jobs. That is the change that he boasted was inevitable! However, the Republicans want so badly to see him fail, that they are not budging. I support his efforts to bring about change in doing business differently. Although it seems frustrating that nothing is getting done, change comes slowly. If time is allowed to heal the past, then eventually, things will change, and bipartisanship will have to happen. We are a country of democracy, and not dictatorship and I, for one, respect his extreme desire for change. As we wait……………

The stimulus plan that wld work graciously: hold some kind of random lottery–give a million dollars to 700 people (& not banks!). Stipulate, that these recipients must pay off their mortgage (stimulating the housing mkt); and their cars (stimulating the automotive industry) before their shopping spree (stimulating the work force). Some people will naturally save, some will naturally open a business, and some will naturally blow the money! Whatever is done with the money, the economy (job mkt, $$$, housing industry, automotive industry) will be stimulated! I know that this sounds far-fetched, but no more so, than giving banks 700 billion dollars for them to profit with large bonuses, slapping tax payers in their face!
