Tiger, You Don't Owe Me a Thing

When Eldrick “Tiger” Woods joined the ranks of professional golf a dozen years ago, it was via the heralded “Hello, World” Nike commercial. When he steps on the podium to speak to an assembled group of friends, colleagues and journalists, the world will truly be watching to see the greatest golfer of this generation talk about the sordid events over the last three months, which have kept him off the golf course and shredded his well-cultivated image and reputation.
The main news networks will air live reports with their anchors there to report and comment on every word; the cable nets will undoubtedly have multiple individuals ready for instant analysis; and millions will tune in to hear Tiger likely apologize and possibly say if and when he will return to competitive golf.

He isn’t expected to take any questions, and that has made for an angry bunch of columnists and commentators. They are denouncing Woods for calling a news conference to make a statement but not undergoing the grilling many want to give him. Woods hasn’t even said a word, and already he’s been called a spoiled, petulant child who has lived in a sheltered world of handlers since he was 2 years old. Some have even gone as far as saying nothing has changed about him, and he’s showing that he is just as selfish and self-absorbed as ever before.

Tiger, let me be as clear as possible as to whether you owe me or the American people an explanation of the events since your car accident during Thanksgiving weekend: Hell no.

I repeat: Tiger, you don’t owe me or anyone else anything!

I’m sick of these sanctimonious folks who are blabbering about Woods needing to be grilled about his private behavior. Look, Tiger Woods didn’t cheat on me. He’s not my daddy, brother, cousin, church member, neighbor or friend. He didn’t let me down or crush my view of him. He is not and never was my role model.

The only people he owes a grand apology to are his wife, momma, family, maybe his friends and his children, when they come of age. He doesn’t have to work hard for me to trust him again. The most important audience he has to satisfy can be counted on one hand.

That’s it. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Ever since I was 14, my desire was to be journalist. And in the last 27 years, I’ve covered it all. And in all of those years, I’ve never believed it was a public official’s obligation to answer my questions. If I was at a county government board meeting in Austin or a city council meeting in Fort Worth, public officials made a choice to talk to me and other journalists. Yes, they were public figures, but no matter how many times I asked the same question, they didn’t have to talk to the media. Should they? Yes. Must? No.

Every sports league has a rule requiring their locker rooms to be open to the media shortly after a game ends. Athletes are required to make themselves available or face a fine, but there is nothing that says they must answer our questions. If they choose to expound on what happened in a game, that’s their decision. But their personal life? That choice is all up to them.

We have had to bear witness to all kinds of allegations of Tiger, the married sports star and successful product pitchman being involved in a variety of affairs with cocktail waitresses, party girls and porn stars.

The details have gone from freaky to bizarre. His reputation has taken a substantial hit; companies he endorsed have removed his face from billboards and cancelled contracts. And by multiple (and unsubstantiated) accounts, his marriage is hanging by a thread.

Yet still, he doesn’t owe the American public or me a damn thing.

Meryl Streep has always earned my respect. When you see magazine cover stories on her, such as the recent one in Vanity Fair, she will talk about a host of subjects and take a ton of photos, but her family is off-limits. She makes it clear: I’ll talk about the work, not my home life.

Jodie Foster is the same way. If she is scheduled to discuss a movie, anything work-related is fine. But when you start asking about sexual orientation, the father of her children, her love life and anything personal, she shuts you down quickly. In fact, her folks will let you know the rules before the interview. She’s consistent and clear.

Intensely private people choose to remain that way, whether loving and faithful couples or a married athlete who is accused of bedding anyone and everyone.

Someone’s personal life is just that, personal. None of us have the right to know what’s going on in someone else’s life when they are out of public view, especially if no public laws were broken.

I’ve been clear that I’m a huge Tiger Woods fan. I’ve walked inside the ropes of many golf tournaments he’s played in and shot hundreds of photos of him that hang on my wall. I count an interview with his father, Earl Woods, as one of my all-time favorites. But journalists need to cut the crap when it comes to demanding that he owes it to us to talk.

What’s amazing is that many of us are hypocrites on this subject. For example, if a journalist is fired, you will hear the suits at the company says they cannot discuss the actions behind the move “because it’s a personnel matter.” Wait. Isn’t a TV anchor, columnist or reporter a public figure? In some cities, they are considered celebrities. So the rules are different for us?

In fact, what if a reporter covered a news conference and returned with a team owner or elected official saying the following about one of their employees: “That’s a personnel matter and I’m not at liberty to share the details of his termination.” Would that editor, news director or network president say that is acceptable? No! They would jump all over the reporter “to do their job” and keep digging to find out what happened. And the columnists and bloggers would be ripping them to shreds.

So, what’s the difference between them and Tiger? Personnel? Personal? Hello!

Isn’t it amazing how different the view looks from the other side of the river?

We live in an age where public figures often share with the world who they slept with, want to sleep with, ate, wear, travel and everything else. Nothing is off-limits. And the public craves it all in blogs, magazines, newspapers, TV and radio. For me, I don’t care about any of it. All I want to see is a good movie dance to a great song, watch an awesome sporting event and witness one golfer take on his peers to become the greatest in the game.

And when a public figure — whether it is Meryl, Jodie or Tiger — chooses to walk off the public stage, they don’t owe me or anyone else an explanation. Their body of work is all that matters and what we will discuss for generations to come.

Nothing more. Nothing less.

Amen Roland. Tiger only owes his wife & family. Funny how people forget they don't live in glass houses themselve. Maybe someone needs to tell loud ass mouth Stephen A Smith (STFU). They are mad that Tiger isn't kissing their asses but they forget he never did. See what people do is make someone their kids idiol and forget they themselves should be that for their kids. Tiger never said he was God. PLAY THE GAME TIGER. Golf really sucks without you in it. See people worrying about Tigers morals need to look in their own damn mirrors.

From the very beginning I have blogged, commented that Tiger doesn't owe anyone anything except a good game of golf when he plays. I was consistently amazed and amused at the comments from those who seriously believed that somehow he had “their” money and he “owed” them an explanation. I asked them to please tell me how his winnings for playing good golf and his endorsements — for playing good golf — had any remote relationship to those who watched or followed. You pay for cable, that's between you and your cable company. You bought a product, hopefully it worked for you. Most have said endorsements don't affect their buying decisions. Any explanations belong to his family. Period. And the reality is — according to one ex-wife of a pro golfer — MOST of the pro golfers do it all the time, with what's called the “other PGA” so this blood in the water media shark fest needs to stop. http://mybooksmyvoice.yolasite.com/i-was-just-t...

I love this article. thanks for expressing yourself and sharing how many of us feel.

  • spencer

To whom it may concern. I for one is not interested in anyone else life that directly effects mine or indirectly. I have not put this man on a “God of a man” status. So what he plays golf and do it well and….. so athletes play sports and do it well and ……no big deal what is a big deal is the social issues of this country and not social issues or issues of individual people who are not really are like any other human with money and status. If this would bring about getting this country as a who;e on the same page about social issues and how to fix it and get it right all

Roland, I commend you on your article regarding Tiger Woods. You are the first person – to my knowledge – to comment with something intelligent, purposeful, authentic and THE TRUTH. Tiger owes us nothing but his best game in golf.

  • Sher

    Roland,
Can you please make sure Tiger reads your commentary! When I heard what happen, I was pissed off because I thought he was on drugs or been driving while he was drunk. But then I found out it was because he slept around, I was like okay what is the big deal about that! Everyone has done a very bad thing or know someone who is has committed some wrong doings. He owes me an apology for making me watch these lame azz golfers on the golf tourneys now. That's, the apology I want.

  • veerob1

Roland so glad you said what i was thinking about Tiger Woods. Couldn't wait to read it and I agree with every one else, the man doesn't owe us anything!

  • dan

We need to get beyond this and let him go forward. He has done too much good and has been a model citizen and athlete. Most of all he is humble and not any different than you or myself. If i had his personality, looks and money. I would have been in the news a hell of a lot earlier. Let him live his life. Let his mom have her dignity back. Leave his kids alone…Far worse things are either history or currently going on with other athletes. Tiger you are human and all of us make wrong moves good luck with the future. you rule and im jealous of the charm and discretion you were able to maintain……good luck and god bless.

  • MelC.

The day of his press conference, per se, I posted on my Facebook the very same sentiment. Tiger owed me nothing. Folks now need to move on.

  • elizabeth

Joyce, you are adsolutely correct. Tiger has more people watching golf as much or more than the majority of sports. His stock has made people millions of dollars. Who are these people he disappointed. Surely somebody the rest of us couldn't care less about. These people need to stop putting athletes and entertainers on their personal pedestal and expect them to live by their codes. Shame on you. This too will pass with the next person looking for a spotlight. Those who mind don't matter. Those who matter don't mind. Be careful out there. You are one of us, we will protect you.

  • coose

It's all about endorsements. TW came out and “confessed” just to make his sponsors happy. I could give a crap less about his personal life, but he's got a million dollar image to uphold.

  • duchess10

Very well said, Roland! However, if Tiger should apologize for anything, it should be his choice in women!!

  • JJ

You say Tiger owes no one and nobody other than his wife and mother an apology. Are you seriuos – how about the companies that pay him millions to RERESENT their products and be ASSOCIATED with their brands. How about the millions of kids he tries to sell HIS/Nike products to. This is just one area you don't have a clue on – no wonder you went bankrupt and the government had to bail you out. Republicans are not against healthcare reform – they are against more entitlement programs, more unfunded spending, sleazy back room deals and more interference by a government that cannot run ANYTHING efficiently or at at low cost. You sir, don't have a clue, only a misdirected opinion.
