Gov. Paterson to won’t seek new term in N.Y.

New York Gov. David Paterson is dropping his election bid amid a growing scandal, NBC News confirmed Friday.

The New York Daily News reported Friday that Paterson has decided not to run again but that he will not resign the governorship, according to a source. A top Democratic official confirmed the report to NBC News.

Paterson rose to governor in 2008, when former Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned in a prostitution scandal. Swirling rumors about Paterson’s administration recently began anew due to a scandal surrounding a domestic abuse complaint against his top aide.

Asked on Thursday if he would withdraw if fellow Democrats asked him to, Paterson responded: “I am obviously listening to them. I’ve got an open mind about this thing. I want the Democrats to win in November.”
