100 percent of first senior class at all male, all African-American Englewood academy is accepted to universities

Urban Prep, Chicago’s only public all-male, all-African-American high school fulfilled its mission: 100 percent of its first senior class had been accepted to four-year colleges. At last count, the 107 seniors gained acceptance to a total of 72 different colleges, including Northwestern University, Morehouse College, Howard University, Rutgers University and University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Alexander was accepted to DePaul University.

While college acceptance is an enormous hurdle to jump, school leaders said they know their job isn’t done; they want to make sure the students actually attend.

To that aim, King said, staff made sure that every student has completed the dreaded Free Application for Federal Student Aid, lest the red tape deter them.

Later in the year, the school plans to hold a college signing day where every student is to sign a promise to go to college, he said. Staff will stay in touch through the summer and hopefully in the first years of school.

This is fabulous.I think every public high school in the nation needs to not only have this article posted but have each teacher and adminitrator read it aloud daily and realize that it can be done.As a board member for a rural South carolina School district it lets me know that there are teachers out there that can get the best out of students no matter where they come from.I feel that all middle and High Schools should have creeds to start their day and allow students to be a part of the creation of the creed. I was really proud of the young men that were on CNN last evening and I watched them say their creed and could tell that the committment was there. Keep up the good work.

This is an article that every administrator and teacher should read daily to start their day. These are not rich kids or kids that have it made, these are kids that are just like the ones in our public schools with issues and other problems. This is called in my opinion, REAL Thinking outside the BOX.Real committment for Every graduating student to be accepted into a 4year college or university says something major.I'm spreading this like wildfire…..

College is one tool to become educated but it is by no means the only one. In the old days you needed college to access libraries (information and data) and to find colleagues to discuss the information you're absorbing to provide context and to challenge your thinking. University brings those things together.
