A five-year plan for Detroit Public Schools will lead to the closure of 41 schools and one administration building by summer, and another 13 by 2012, in response to shrinking enrollment that has put Detroit at the forefront nationally in school closings.
The closures will mean that the number of buildings in the district will drop to 117, down from 260 in 2005.
The $1-billion plan, to be unveiled today, seeks to reduce costs by eliminating unused space, and supports city plans for development in some neighborhoods while moving schools out of underpopulated areas.
