Roland Martin discusses the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism report entitled, A Study of African Americans in U.S. News Coverage. This report was released on Monday, July 26, 2010.
From early 2009 through early 2010, the biggest news story related to African Americans was the controversy triggered by the arrest last summer of a prominent black Harvard University professor by a white Cambridge, Massachusetts police officer. It accounted for nearly four times more African American-related coverage than did either of two biggest national “issue” stories covered by the mainstream media during the same period – the economy and health care.
Roland stated, “… if there is no drama, if you don’t have a Black man like Gates getting arrested or if you don’t have Shirley Sherrod getting fired, if you don’t have that kind of single story; that generates all kinds of attention, for the most part, Black people are totally ignored”.
The Pew Research Center examined over 67,000 stories, encompassing cable, television, newspapers, blogs as well as magazines. “Bottom line is we are totally ignored when it comes to these stories”, Roland said, “You have folks who are in executive positions. You have people who are in news making decisions, who frankly don’t see any relevance to Black people in everyday life …”
Roland explained that, “ … we have to continue to hold media executives’ feet to the fire and say ‘Look you can not talk about Black America in this crazy way, where frankly there is nothing of substance”.
