Roland Martin talks with Michaela Angela Davis, former Fashion Editor for Essence Magazine about Essence hiring a White Fashion Editor.
Davis explained that the visceral reaction to Essence’s decision to hire a White fashion editor is a result of institutionalized racism in the industry and this feels like something has been taken away from African-Americans. She said, “There is something that’s hitting peoples’ hearts on this”.
Roland asks Davis, “How can we as African-Americans, especially those of us who are journalist, how can we talk about White magazines hiring us for our skills and our talents, but then we say ‘Oh but for jobs at Black Magazines, no its different.”
Davis replied “This particular position, there are no Black women in any magazine for women in the mainstream that are Black, but this position. Fashion Director represents the brand in the industry. They talk about it, they go on television. They personify the style of that brand. They are out in front, being an example to people”. She continued to explain, “This is not a copy editor, this is not someone in accounting. This is someone that represents the brand inside of an environment where you [African-Americans] are not represented anywhere”.
