TJMS: George Wilborn Denied Chance To Buy $1.7 Million Home Because He’s Black

08/12/2010 10:55 am 4 comments

Comedian George Wilborn was recently denied an opportunity to buy a $1.7 million home in Bridgeport, IL. The Department of Urban Housing and Development has filed a administrative complaint against the homeowners, the real estate agent and his firm, Prudential Rubloff Properties.

Roland Martin talks with James Perry, Board Member and Executive Director of the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center about how you can protect yourself from housing discrimination.

Yearly, millions of people are victims of housing discrimination. Perry explains that even though there are four million violations of the Federal Fair Housing Act every year, only 30,000 claims are actually filed. Perry said, “people experience discrimination, but they don’t act on it”.

The most important thing anyone can do, if they fell that they have been discriminated against, is to call the National Fair Housing Alliance or HUD and file a complaint. There is an investigation process in place to determine whether or not a person has been discriminated against.

Thanks for posting this. I am glad that Perry said this happens more than we know; people HAVE to start acting on this. I went through a similar situation with a school district here in Georgia. I had to file a complaint with OCR. I know there are other kids who have experienced discrimination but their parents are either afraid to take action or were taught not to ‘rock the boat.’ It is really sad that we have to go through these things, yet sadder that we do not take action.

If you’re shocked by this you’ve gotten too comfortable.

Anyone who thinks discrimination is dead better think again. I work in a federal agency that enforces affirmative action/non-dicrimination laws. My co-workers and I see first hand, on a daily basis, just how ingrained prejudice is. Senator Webb of Virginia recently took a stand against affirmative action programs saying that the white male is now the victim – guess again Senator. And for the record, I am of the caucasian persuasion, was married to an african american man and lived in Chicago in the 1970's – I see it hasn't changed that much since I left. Good for Mr. and Mrs. Wilborn – take all of them to the woodshed and let them pay through the nose for their antiquated, backwards way of thinking!

Wow! The homeowners actually pulled their house off of the market? With the state of our housing market, most homeowners are dying to sell their home! I wonder if George was married to a white woman and had “not that black” children, would the scenario be the same? The bottom line is George has a “black family”. There is a growing population of individuals in our society that are “selectively racist”. These individuals don't like people of color, but they love to see successful and wealthy black men with white women. Why? They are confident that if they divorce, the white woman will inherit his wealth. Also, when he dies (if the marriage lasts), she will inherit his wealth. In both scenarios, the money is going straight back to the white man….
