Gardena, Calif. – A student is in custody after allegedly going on a shooting spree at a high school in Los Angeles, injuring three people, police told CBS News Station KCBS-TV.
Gardena High School had been placed on lockdown while police searched for the suspect, who was believed to be a 16-year-old student dressed in dark clothes, according to Gardena police Lt. Steve Prendergast.
There are differing accounts of the number of victims. Local police said three people were wounded Tuesday morning at Gardena High School. A Los Angeles Unified School District spokesman said two students were wounded.
KTLA-TV has shown one youth in police custody. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times reports a suspect was holed up in a classroom and that police were talking to him, a student.
District spokesman Robert Alaniz told KCBS-TV that a student brought a gun to school in a backpack and it went off when he dropped it.
