Gingrich Says Obama Administration ‘Amateurish’ On Egypt (VIDEO)

Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich said he’s “concerned” about the Obama administration’s handling of the situation in Egypt and what he sees as a divide between the White House and diplomat Franks Wisner.

“I think the fact that they appointed a very able diplomat Frank Wisner and within two days were publicly contradicting him is you know so amateurish,” Gingrich told CNN Chief National Correspondent John King. “I was with John Bolton (former ambassador to the United Nations) last night. He said it’s inconceivable that they would be this clumsy and this out of sync. I mean just with themselves, forget the Arab world. They can’t even get the White House and their special envoy to be on the same page.”

Gingrich is using the same (dis-informed) talking points that FOX and GOP neophytes are trying to play up. The fact is that Wisner was tasked with delivering a message from the Obama Administration straight to Mubarak’s ear, ‘It’s time to back down’. And clearly the message was received. The timing and logistics of the ‘backing down’ process is still up to Mubarak and the Egyptians. The U.S., rightfully, does NOT have a seat at that table yet, ‘American exceptionalist’ belligerence notwithstanding.

The Right’s myopic foreign policy tactic of marginalizing the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt would only serve to fuel anti-U.S. sentiments in the region while the new Egyptian government is in its infancy. Ironically, this tactic would create a very real security threat to Israel. And perhaps that is ultimately the intent of rightwing middle-east policy: To create a situation so tense that Israel is forced into a military confrontation with it’s predominantly Islamic neighbor(s), thus escalating the Right’s proxy war against Islam.
