Man Robbed Bank For $1 So He Could Get Health Care In Jail

Gastonia, NC (WBTV) – Police have charged a man following a bizarre incident at a bank in Gastonia Thursday afternoon.

According to the Gastonia Police Department, there was a robbery around 1 p.m. at the RBC Bank at 500 S. New Hope Road.

Police said the suspect handed a teller a note saying ‘This is a bank robbery and I need medical attention.’ The man, who only requested one dollar, then sat down and waited for police to arrive.

When officers arrived, they took the man into custody, but they say he did not have a weapon.

Police identified the man as 59-year-old James Richard Verone of Poston Circle, Gastonia. They said he went into the bank because he needed money to pay for medical bills.
