Daily rundown of the topics on WVON's The Roland S. Martin Showby Roland S. Martin April 10, 2008 Don't even go there! Yea, its been a minute since I updated this page. But hey, we're working on it! China was on our mind and we discussed should President Bush boycott the opening ceremonies or if boycotting the Olympics makes any sense. Also, we talked with Johnny Taylor, CEO of IAC's Black Web Enterprises, about the launcy of a new search engine, RushmoreDrive.com. August 24, 2007 Click this link to watch the video, "Read-A-Book" by Bomani Armah that has garnered major attention on BET, and has its critics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SWs9hyWlXI< /FONT>July 24, 2007 Yea, yea, yea. It has been forever. But I'm pulling in two to three interns who will help with a lot of multimedia stuff so we can keep things going with the daily rundown. A group of Chicago ministers, organized under the banner of Pastors United for Change, traveled to Springfield on Monday to push legislators to pass a state budget, especially in the areas of education. Dads get ripped today. They are marginalized in commercials and are often maligned. It’s time that we stop dissing men and give them the props they deserve for playing huge roles in the lives of children. Sure, you have individuals who don’t take care of their responsibilities, but there are many who do, and we ned to celebrate them. ROLAND’S TAKE. One of the issues Kirk raised was the removal of music from our school system. You know, I watched Mr. Holland’s Opus over the weekend and there was the scene where he discusses the removal of the arts from the school system. I played an instrument in elementary, middle and high school, and music is important. We are raising another generation of folks who don’t the chance to experience the creativity of music and the arts, and we are worse off as a result. March 26, 2007 What, two months since I updated this? Wow! OK, we'll do better. Big story...6 off-duty cops in Chicago beat down four businessmen THREE MONTHS AGO and they still have yet to be charged. And there is a videotape! Callers were pretty outraged this morning. Ald. Ike Carruthers, chair of the city's Police and Fire Committee, said if the cops who showed up after 9-1-1 calls were made didn't do anything, they should be fired. Service unions weren't too happy when aldermen didn't back the big box ordinance, which passed, but was vetoed by Mayor Daley. So they decided to target select aldermen, and some are calling their actions racist...or it politics? Tired of folks being ghetto? Somehow it has reached into the mainstream. So author Cora Daniels explores it her new book Ghettonation: A Journey into the land of Bling and Home of the Shameless. Should she step down or keep running?
Jan. 5, 2007 What's going on with Christians attacking Muslims? I was on CNN's Paula Zahn NOW Thursday night and we discussed the hate that is being projected towards Muslims. And one person who is leading this effort is Florida pastor, Rev. O’Neal Dozier, who carries two guns, afraid of being attacked by Muslims. He has objected to a mosque being built in his neighborhood, saying it will attrack poor, young Black men to their cause. I guess Ol' Rev has a weak ministry. If he can't attract the young Black men to his church, don't blame the Muslims! Look in the mirror! Rev. James Meeks stood side-by-side Thursday with Mayor Richard Daley in the call to change how education is funded in the state. But he also made some comments that were critical of Clerk Dorothy Brown's mayoral bid. Will the pastor and state senator support Daley in next month's election? My Life and the Black Panther Party. Black Holocaust Why the disrespect of African Americans and the Black holocaust? Chicago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg, in an effort to diss reparations, made the argument that slavery turned out to be good for African Americans because of the state of Africa today. But on Sunday Mary Mitchell of the Sun-Times followed that up with her own view, asserting that no one would make that claim about Jews and the Holocaust. Feeling as if his first column wasn't good enough, Steinberg writes again that reparations is a waste of time and that Blacks would be better off focusing on something else. Question of the day: Are African Americans better off because of slavery? Ernie Chambers , joined us to discuss the NAACP joining with the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund in the filing of a lawsuit opposing he sponsored that would split the Omaha Public School system in three distinct districts based on attendance zones. Click here to read the story done by the Online News Magazine of the Nebraska Legislature. Bruce Gordon, president and CEO of the NAACP said: “For nearly 100 years the NAACP has fought against state imposed segregation. That’s why we stand today with the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund in opposition to this onerous law that violates the Constitution and the Supreme Court ruling that struck down the doctrine of separate but equal. We are concerned that this law will have a negative impact on children in our community.” Read the NAACP's statement . Theodore M. Shaw, director-counsel and President of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund said: "LDF joined this litigation not because we believe that all-black institutions are inherently inferior because they are black, or that black children need to sit beside white children to learn. And while we believe in the political empowerment of black, Latino and all people, we do not believe that governance bodies should be all white, all black or all Latino to govern our school system. We joined this litigation because we continue to believe that racially segregated schools are not equal, and that the State ought not to make decisions that intentionally segregate students on the basis of race." Read Shaw's full statement . But Chambers says the NAACP and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund has it wrong. He says his bill doesn't even mention race at all. Read the actual bill here. He also points out that a nearly all-white district that surrounds Omaha, District 66, was created the same way in 1947, yet the NAACP and other opponents to his measure have said nothing about the all-white governing body that rules the district.
